A common purpose unites each and every ritual, explains author Rachel Pollack, who offers this primer on creating meaningful rituals. At its core, a ritual helps us acknowledge the important moments in our life, whether it is marriage to one's beloved or the welcoming of the spring equinox. A ritual "connects us to each other, to nature, to the cycles and rhythms of life," she explains. "It opens our heart to love and to intense emotion-sadness and longing as well as joy. And it opens a space for what we call the sacred or spirituality to enter our lives."

Chapter by chapter, Pollack offers do-it-yourself suggestions for creating grand and small rituals, such as the exchanging of love vows, conceiving a baby, or the saying of a daily blessing. She also explores the many tools of ritual, including sound (humming, turning a rainstick), sight (rock art, working with color), and "Smell and Taste" (preparing food, sipping wine, introducing essential oils). Other rituals include walking labyrinths, making a pilgrimage, celebrating menopause, and burying a placenta. --Gail Hudson

Review

Without knowing it, perhaps, we have a great deal of ritual in our lives. In "The Power of Ritual," Rachel Pollack recommends that we consciously develop the practice of ritual. If we do, she says, our lives will be transformed. It isn't necessary to believe in a higher power, or God, or special spirits to have a rich practice of ritual. We don't have to belong to a particular religion or accept the beliefs of any single tradition. Pollack tells us that we can "borrow" ideas for ritual from any number of sources and put them together in a way that works well for us, our family, and our community. All it takes is imagination and creativity..... The strong point of this book is the variety of the rituals described. We learn about Buddhist prostrations, American Indian sweat lodges, Japanese tea ceremonies, and the Wiccan May Day. The author invites the reader to partake, and she graciously shares her own experience as an example of a life transformed by this practice. For those who want suggestions for rituals to bring into their lives, this book will be very helpful. -- From Beliefnet
