Detailed explanations suitable for self-instruction are given for the design and operation of a large variety of power supplies and converters. Provides a sound basis of theoretical knowledge while stressing practical methods, allowing the reader to apply the ideas in the text to all types of circuits. Discusses transient circuit analysis, Fourier analysis, electric machine theory, and elementary control system theory, and goes on to discuss various types of systems and their physical appearance, circuits including thyristors and the method of rating and classifying them. Individual classes of converter are examined in succeeding chapters. Numerical examples based on practical experience are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great textbook in power electronics..., May 17, 2005

This review is from: Power Semiconductor Circuits (Hardcover)
An amazing book, too bad it went out of print. Even having that the book was published in 1975 it worked better for my undergrad course in power electronics than Rashid's. The book begins with solid analyses of simple diode circuits and builds upon them. Of course it assumes that the readed is not a novice in circuit study (but who is when you've reached the power electronics courses?). In the third chapter it introduces the thyristor and does the same analysis (R, L, C, RL, RC, RLC, load/line/force conmmutation) done on the second chapter. AC voltage converters in the fourth. Single and three phase controlled rectifiers in the fifth. DC/DC converters in the sixth. Inverters in the seventh (with a good subchapter in single pulse, multi pulse, sin pulse and PW modulation). And finally AC/AC converters in the eighth. It might be out-of-date regarding the latest devices, but as far as the theory foundations this is the book to have. And for around $20 it's a bargain. Get it, you wont regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, March 19, 2010

This review is from: Power Semiconductor Circuits (Hardcover)
This is a pretty decent book, as it explains the fundamentals from the start, and then gives very thorough derivations in all chapters. My only beef with this book is that it isn't long enough, and that it focuses mostly on SCR aplications (There is alot on phase controlled rectification). It is also a good reference for studying and designing SCR commutation circuits.
