A powerful approach to sleep hygiene, May 13, 2009
This review is from: Power Sleep: The Revolutionary Program That Prepares Your Mind for Peak Performance [POWER SLEEP]
Jsmes Maas is a former head of the Cornell Department of Psychology and a popular professor. Most who teach sleep science have used his movies of major contributors to the field. That on Jouvet is outstanding. It shows the beginnings of our understanding of the physiology of sleep.
His book presents a review of the sleep disorders, including those featuring excessive daytime sleepiness, such as narcolepsy and sleep apnea.
It then presents a sophisticated program for overcoming sleep hygiene difficulties, including a morning log and check list designed to eliminate habits that interfere with a good night's sleep. Among the chapters is "Surviving as a Shift Worker." That's a topic many such books neglect.
There is also a list of suggested readings and videos, of web sites and sleep disorder centers.
In my book, I suggest taking a good sleep hygiene book home. If you find yourself "trying to sleep," use a low intensity book light, sit up and read about sleep hygiene. You may find yourself going to sleep as you read "sleep. . .sleep." If not, you will at least learn about sleep hygiene and may find out where you went wrong.
Most sleep hygiene "rules" state dogmatically "Use the bed only for sleeping and sex!" Maas is more sophisticated then that. His book may be a good one for you to take home.
