Designed as a basic text for an introductory, interdisciplinary social science course. This text introduces students to central concepts in anthropology, sociology, economics, psychology, political science, and history. The text focuses these perspectives on a central integrative theme and interdisciplinary viewpoint-the nature and uses of power in society. POWER AND SOCIETY introduces students to some of the central challenges facing American society; for example, ideological conflict, racism and sexism, poverty and powerlessness, crime and violence, community problems, and international relations. Focusing on controversy stimulates students' interest and appreciation for social sciences.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The sidebars are VERY helpful so students had key terms on the same page as the concept they are reading. The graphs are simple and clear and the pages are not cluttered. This text is an easy read for an introductory book."Liz Clark, Kaplan University

"We live in a global society. The International Perspectives feature does a very good job of enhancing the students' idea of the world and its interconnectedness." J. Russell Willis, Grambling State University --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intensive / Extensive, November 3, 2006

An excellent examination of how societies - this one in particular - are structured. It gets three stars because I don't think the author grasps as Du Bois would say, 'The Negro Question' very well. At best, it's generic. I also think he places an inordinate amount of validity in the U.S. Government. The inter-disciplinary approach is logical. Side note: the book was written in the mid '80's so the Soviet Union is still in full stride. Retrospectively, the rudiments of their collapse is ostensible in terms of militaristic expenditures and overall paranoia. The chapter on 'Psychology and Power' is exceptional. Ultimately, the book is informative on American society and should be read by the inquisitve.
