It only tells if your power supply is dead,

My PS failed to power up the PC. It turned out that the 12+V line is 10.99V which is below the min spec of 11.4V. A new PS did the trick. However, when I tested the damaged PS with this device, all LEDs show green. This device will be good if the PS is dead; it can tell you that. Otherwise, it will give you a wrong assumption (some previous users made comments on this but I failed to pay attention to. This review is to re-emphasize this fact). A good old multimeter is the way to go.

This will NOT tell you if your power supply is good or bad. I test power supplies often and this will test a power supply showing good BUT when you put that power supply to a motherboard and try to power it on NOTHING. Hook another power supply to the machine and the computer works. You could have just made the wrong diagnosis if relying upon this item.
This is a pretty toy but not a tool. You may wrongly diagnose a motherboard as being bad because of this. Maybe it has something to do with a motherboard putting more of a load on a power supply than the LED's in this tester. Mark my words- don't rely on this for real testing. You will keep bad power supplies (unless all you were going to power were LED's) and throw away good motherboards. Can we put a load on this? I really do need a good tester. Anybody??

This is great for the price.
I was quickly able to diagnose whether my powersupply had died on me or if it was yet another system board issue. I first tried it on a known good power supply just so I could see the results of what happens with a good power supply. Then hooked it up to the one I felt was dead and yup only got one light to sorta flash a little bit and was able to replace just the part that had gone out and get my system back up and running. I would Highly recommend this tool to any to help diagnose dead power supplies, at the price its at. Now if your system turns on and has power supply issues then I would just use a multimeter however when you feel your system board has fried and you need a load to turn the power supply on, this is a great tool for doing just that.

Tells if the power supply is completely dead but...,

it will not detect the minor power fluctuations that might cause your motherboard to not send the power_good signal.
That is as far as this product goes. It is fairly well constructed, has LEDs and sounds to tell if it delivers power at all but ultimatly it will only test if the powersupply is completely dead, not just dead enough not to be useful. Bottom line: It can be useful in a quick diagnosis for the price but simply because it delivers all green doesn't mean the power supply won't have problems completely hooked up to your system. Id probibly reccomend using a digital multimeter and a paperclip to test if you have the expertice, if not this may be a low cost option to see if you have to shell out another $80 for a new PS.

Looks great - Does NOT work for most applications - STAY AWAY!,
This review is from: Power Supply Tester 2.0 20/24 (Personal Computers)
I bought this to test a PSU that I suspected as having problems. Sadly, it told me that the PSU was working fine. I swapped Power Supplies, and the motherboard fires up, with the suspected bad PSU, I get lights (on the motherboard) and the fans spin, but it won't POST or even fire for that matter.
I bust out the multimeter, and lo and behold, the 12V 4 pin rail is only pushing about 8.8 - 9.0 Volts. I check the known good PSU, and it reads 12V exactly. I check the suspected PSU on the molex 4 pins, and same thing, 8.8 - 9.0 Volts, the 5V portion comes up perfectly. The "tester" reads the 4 pin molex plug as working as well. My best conclusion is that the "tester" from Ultra merely tests for continuity, but does not actually check voltage/amps. Sadly, this product looks pretty, and may very well detect some bad PSU's, but should not be relied on, as there is a LOT more than just an incomplete circuit that can go wrong with a PSU. I've seen a few other PSU testers that claim they test for high/low voltage as well, and I'm going to check them out and see how they perform compared to this product.

This product does not meet the expectations for what is supposed to work, explained why:
Makes no distinction from a bad source or a good source, I say this because I have a small workshop intente with 3 sources, 1 good and all the LEDs on, then try 1 as bad and all leds lit but the source does not work well, then try another bad and the results were identical ... I think this product is nothing more than a lighter font than $ 20 and so does a simple clip but it costs $ 0.01.

I love this product it is very simple to use just plug it in and it tells you whether or not each power supply cable is working or not.Great to test power supplies without a test meter.

I recently had two of my household computers crash. Both just quit working. This is usually a power supply problem. This Tool will save you time and money diagnosing whether or not it is your power supply that died. I would definitely recommend this item to a friend.

Finally got to try out the product while troubleshooting a dead system today. It worked great......in other words it correctly identified a dead powersupply without me having to swap out powersupplies in order to find out if the powersupply was indeed the failing part. So it did exactly what it said it would do.

Extremely useful.
This has helped diagnosis greatly, as well as speeding up turn around time on defective units. Great buy for the price. |
