Book Description

November 25, 1998 0071343237 978-0071343237
Protection is the art and science of detecting abnormal behaviour of a system and of initiating action to minimize damage and permit timely return of the system to normal. In a power system, this requires prompt action, as many of the problems requiring protective action, such as high voltage short circuits, have the potential of causing great harm to physical systems, if not removed very quickly. Much of the analysis regarding power system protection requires knowledge of the power system behaviour in response to abnormal events, for it is necessary to correctly recognize and analyze events in order to command prompt protective action. This book presents the analysis of the power system that will enable the proper corrective action to be initiated.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

In a world of huge, interconnected networks that can be completely blacked out by disturbances, Power System Protection offers an improved understanding of the requirements necessary for prompt and accurate corrective action. P.M. Anderson, a noted expert on power systems, presents an analytical and technical approach to power system protection. His discussion shows how abnormal system behavior can be detected before damage occurs, and points to effective control action to limit system outages. Advance your knowledge of power system protection through a better understanding of:
  • Protective devices and controls
  • Protection concepts
  • Transmission protection
  • Apparatus protection
  • System aspects of protective systems
  • Reliability analysis of protective systems
Power System Protection is written for practicing engineers and advanced graduate-level student engineers, who need a comprehensive resource on the principles of power system behavior and methods of system analysis. This essential reference work provides new and advanced concepts for understanding systems performance. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, April 9, 2009
This book deals with the area of conventional power system protection. The topics covered in this book include basic concepts of protection system, relay logic, basics of setting selection, transmission line protection systems, bus protection, Transformer and reactor protection, HVDC protection, SSR protection, Protection coordination, Generator and motor protection. The book also covers complex topics like system aspects of protection, reliability of the protection system, and Makov modeling of protection systems. The book was first published in 1998, so it doesn't cover the area of smart grid or application of PMU's in power system protection. But this is a good reference book for both researchers and engineers and it`s currently the best book in the area of power system protection. The book comes with a demo protection software cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best for academics, July 17, 2010

This book is recommended for academics and researchers. This book size is really big and it covers many things .It covers a lot of mathematics derivations .

I will not recommend this book for practising engineers.Because it is more research oriented , it is not of much use for practical field engineers .One engineer will need a lot of time to grasp the material from this book .Sometimes one will feel he is lost in the forest.
