5.0 out of 5 stars A must see to learn the true power of real Karate!, April 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Power Training for Karate (Tsunami) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In this video, Higaonna Sensei demonstrates some of the traditional training methods that earned such lasting reputations for great karate men of the past. Feats of strength and power were the measure of great karate men long before fancy titles and belts. Master Higaonna is truly one of the greats by that or any standard. There is also invaluable historical information included in this video. Whether or not you practice the same style as Master Higaonna(Goju Ryu), and I personally do not, this tape can be followed as a workout tape (though novices may want to modify the intensity a bit) and as a self-training tool for developing strength and power. Some traditional equipment may be hard to find, like the clay jars (nigiri gami), stone weights (chishi and sashi),or the iron oval (kongo ken), but reasonable facsimiles can easily be substituted with a little imagination. (I personally use one-gallon pickle jars for the nigiri game, as an example.) Just seeing how training was done in "the old days" being performed by one of today's great masters is inspiring, and training along with the tape is motivational and challenging. Regardless of your style or art, including such training in your personal regimen will increase your appreciation for the men who developed and passed karate on, but mostly will help to improve your abilities to a level above your peers. Few can accomplish the feats that the founders of karate are credited with, but this training will go a long way toward helping the serious karate person to do just that!

This video is the best reference available on power training and conditioning anywhere. Lots of information, entertaining to watch (inspirational), and a valuable resource. I own over 200 martial arts videos and this is one of my favorites-it will be one of yours also! Put this video in and POWER UP!

The comments provided by reviewer Eddy Shumacher says it all. To date, this is the best martial arts instruction video I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic karate video by an exceptional instructor., April 24, 1999

This is the first karate instructional video I've bought, and its still one of my favorites. There is so much information packed into the 90 minutes that it's difficult to watch it all at once. A great instructor and a really high quality video.

5.0 out of 5 stars personal appraisal, April 27, 1999

This review is from: Power Training for Karate (Tsunami) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am truly delighted with this video and all the other martial arts tapes produced by TSUNAMI. They provide such a wealth of instructive material that, as a karate instructor - in France - I find myself referring to them constantly both for my own progress and also as teaching material for my three weekly classes. I even use sections from tapes ( such as KOBUDO dealing with weapons) not directly linked to my own style of karate and incorporate them in my teaching. I have even started to learn from the tape UCHINADI the wonderful white crane kata so masterfully demonstrated by a Japanese master. Throughout the series, the photography is truly superb, the explanations are crystal clear and the accompanying text and musical background make these tapes compulsive and highly enjoyable viewing! I was - until now - so accustomed to the "average" martial arts tapes shot in a bare training room and with poor commentary that I was astounded by the very high quality of the TSUNAMI tapes. I understand that more are scheduled and I can't wait to buy them. I would not hesitate to recommend the TSUNAMI tapes to martial arts instructors and students alike and I would definitely give these tapes top rating.

I myself study Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, this video is a wealth of knowledge on "old school" training methods which are really quite effective even today. I think this video is good to have for students of any Style of Karate, not just Goju.
