Two Speeds for Beginners and Advanced Users

Whether your child is a beginner or an advanced driver, the Lightning McQueen race car's two driving speeds can accommodate him or her. The vehicle features an electronic power lock braking system that automatically stops the vehicle when your child's foot lifts from the pedal. A shifter with high-speed lockout for beginners provides custom control of driving speeds--low speed for normal cruising, and high speed for maximum 3-1/2-mph racing. The vehicle can also shift into reverse for convenient backing up.

The Power Wheels Lightning McQueen race car performed remarkably well in testing. The vehicle took less than 60 minutes to assemble and 18 hours to fully charge. Its solid construction and low center of gravity provided optimal handling and balance. However, for a race car, a 12-volt battery would have been more appropriate to provide sufficient power. Despite this concern, kids will likely appreciate the sleek styling, powerful handling, and custom controls.

My son is 4 years old and I was afraid it would be too small, but it fits him just right and I'm certain to get 2 good years out of it! He was so excited when he came home. My recommendation is to take some time off work or take some time before your child comes home because if it is a surprise for he or she then just know that some assembly is required, sticker placement, screwing on the front bumber and spoiler, etc. Plus the car's battery has to charge for at least 18 hours before it's first use. At least you'll know ahead of time now so that when yours comes you can follow my instructions and enjoy it 10 times more with your child.

ASSEMBLY PROCESS:

Putting together my 3-year-old's new Lightning McQueen Power Wheels car took the better part of my morning and early afternoon. Because some of the pieces did not align correctly, it was hard to do this without a little bit of help. The directions were easy to follow, and one of the tools necessary to screw on bolts was included. The only tool you will need to have on hand is a Phillips screwdriver.

Most of the stickers were already on the car, but the majority of them required me to place them. Some of the stickers already in place had bubbles or small creases in them, and I probably would have done a better job affixing them myself. The stickers I had to place myself were all on the same sheet of paper, and a few were a pain to remove from the sheet. On a couple of them, I managed to pull off the backing, and the sticky part was not showing. I had to then remove the sticker at a different place to make sure only the sticky part came off of the sheet.

I had a little bit of confusion because there is a new set of directions for where to place the stickers on a separate sheet of paper rather than inside of the instructions guide. I had forgotten about the extra sheet of paper, and followed along in the instructions guide. If there is a really huge difference on sticker placement, I missed it. But if you want it to be 100% perfect, then don't forget about the extra sheet like I did.

The Lightning McQueen Power Wheels car runs on a 6-volt battery and the battery and the charger are supplied. The 6-volt battery requires a bit of maintenance I wasn't prepared for; it must charge for at least 18 hours, and no longer than 30. When not in use, you have to charge it at least once per month. You will also need 1 AA battery (not included) to operate the sound effects in the steering wheel. There are English or Spanish phrases, as well as car sounds only. Set your preferred language, and the car sounds are mixed in with the phrases.

DRIVING THE CAR:

The Lightning McQueen Power Wheels car is intended for children 3 and up with a maximum weight of 65 lbs. I expect that my daughter will get a couple of years of use out of this car. We took it out for a spin this morning, and I was surprised by how quickly she was able to get the hang of using it. Pushing on the gas pedal is the easy part for her; steering the wheel to change course will take a bit more work. I was happy that she wasn't scared about riding in it, and loved listening to her gleeful giggles as she drove her very first car. Her first spin didn't last very long, but I suspect that she will be begging us to take her out "driving" again really soon.

A parent can easily keep up with the car with light jogging or fast paced walking (depending on your stride); younger children may need assistance with the steering so they don't run into trees or the side of your house. The plastic on the car is not as durable as I had hoped, so it will quickly show wear and tear if you and your child are not careful.

A FEW THINGS TO BE AWARE OF:

1. You should recharge the battery after each use for at least 14 hours. The battery can stay inside the car while you charge it.

2. Don't use the car during wet weather because it can damage the electrical switches.

3. Avoid using the car around sandy or gravely sidewalks; if the sand/gravel gets up into the car, it can cause it to jam and the motor might stop working.

4. To clean the car, use a DRY soft cloth. Never use soap on it or spray it down. The plastic pieces of the car can be polished with a non-wax furniture polish for a shiny look. If you do this, remember to use a soft cloth.

5. No more than one child should ride in the car at a time. This is a one-seat vehicle only.

FINAL REFLECTIONS:

Any child who loves Lightning McQueen is going to love riding around in their very own car. The speed is perfect for younger children, because supervision is a must for use of this car. Parents will love that over exertion isn't necessary to keep up with the speed, while the child will still think he or she is "driving fast".

A lot of upkeep is required to make sure the battery stays in good working condition. If a parent or guardian isn't willing to take that into consideration, then this is probably not the best outdoor toy for your child. The instruction guide is very simple to follow, and should be read before you begin assembling the car.

I definitely don't regret getting this car for my daughter; she loves Lightning McQueen and the Cars movie, so this was a very special treat for her. I'm sure she will get a lot of use out of it, and I am truly excited to take her out with the car on future outings.

The fit and finish isn't what you'd expect for a toy of this expense/caliber. During construction two of the screw holes cracked when tightening them down, plastic mounting tabs just don't work well for screwed in pieces. This was exasperated by the machining tolerances. Some of the screw holes didn't line up directly and required a second person to hold the car in place during construction and forcing the piece over to line up to the screw hole. The hood doesn't latch completely, and pops open even more when the kids ride over bumps. They include a socket wrench type tool for construction which is supposed to be used to unlatch the hood when you need to charge the battery. No need for the tool since the hood doesn't stay closed anyway.

The product description is incorrect. You need a single AA battery as opposed to the three AAA's stated.

The car has only a gas pedal, the kids have to lift their foot off of the pedal to stop the car, the stopping action is pretty quick. There is a speed selector for slow forward and fast forward and reverse. It took about two minutes for them to figure out throwing the speed selector from fast to reverse was quite amusing. Time will tell how long the transmission holds up to this abuse.

The sides of the car just snap into place. This tends to be where you need to pull on the car to get them back on track when they go astray out of the safe boundaries. Pulling here sometimes causes the side panel to snap out, which is easily pushed back into place.

The 3.5mph speed is perfect for a 3-4 year old, learning how to drive, it's a nice walking speed to keep up with the car. Watch your shins though when they slam it into reverse and you're right behind the car. There is no weight limit mentioned anywhere.

No real problems driving off the sidewalk either, which I was pretty shocked by. We've been stuck in a rainy pattern and driving up the lawn which is a slight incline didn't pose any problems. However my neighbor who never cuts her grass, did cause the car to get stuck.
