Received too late for a full review, Bradford's newest romantic suspense yarn (Her Own Rules, 1996, etc. etc.) begins during one Thanksgiving in Connecticut and ends, some months later, in the Grill Room of the Dorchester Hotel in London. Center-stage, betweentimes, is the title's woman of power: the late-40ish, super- rich (thanks to her British in-laws' silversmith business) Stevie Jardine--married at 16, widowed at 23, and now with three grown children, one of whom may be a good deal more devious than anyone (most especially his mother) ever knew. BARBARA TAYLOR BRADFORD

Barbara Taylor Bradford, OBE is one of the world's best loved storytellers. Her 1979 debut novel, A Woman of Substance, ranks as one of the top-ten bestselling books of all-time, with more than 30 million copies in print. All 25 of her novels to date have been major worldwide bestsellers. Her 26th book, Playing The Game, will be published on October 12th by St. Martin's Press.

Bradford was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire (UK) as the only child of Freda and Winston Taylor. She grew up in the Leeds suburb of Armley and after Town Street Church of England School worked in the typing pool at the Yorkshire Evening Post before going into journalism. By the age of twenty she was the fashion editor of Woman's Own Magazine and an editor and columnist on Fleet Street for the London Evening News.

Bradford's books have sold more than eighty-two (82) million copies worldwide in more than ninety (90) countries and forty (40) languages. Ten (10) of her books have been made into miniseries and television movies, making her one of the best-selling authors over the last 30 years.

In April of 2003, Mrs. Bradford was inducted into the Writers Hall of Fame of America alongside Mark Twain, Langston Hughes and Dr. Seuss. This is the first book I've read by Barbara Taylor Bradford. Since she's a bestselling author, i suppose she must have written some books that are better than thise one, because there's no chance that a publisher would ever have published this book if it was written by an unknown author.

If you read on the back of the book, it's supposedly about a woman whose life is "turned into turmoil and despair" after "an unexpected act of violence" and that she "must go back to her own past and confront a relationship that has only brought her heartbreak". This act of violence takes place about two thirds into the book. Before that, there's just a long, tedious buildup, where absolutely nothing happens. The actual story of the book is the last 100 pages or so, and if you haven't already given up on the book by then, even they are completely uninteresting.

The book is one of the most tedious books I've ever read and it should never have been published. Don't waste your time and money on it and don't encourage the author and publisher by wasting your money on it.

I first fell in love with Barbara Taylor Bradford's work "A Woman of Substance." Then I proceeded to read everybook that came out and I was in awe. Power of a Woman is well written with the right mixture of Romance and Intelligence. To me "A Woman of Substance" was more powerful but BTB has shown that she is consistent and a great storyteller!
