4.0 out of 5 stars Good book with some new ideas
I read a lot of books (more than 40 each year) and because of that it takes a lot to impress me in a self-development books because I've read so manyof them. Scott does have some new insights in this book and a few new ways of sharing the same information that others have shared. My suggestion is that, if you've read lots of self-development books, you will get a little...

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, don't buy the hype
I'm sure the author is a genuinely concerned person about humanity, but this book was restating the obvious. A very boring read.

The fact that they use those "marketing form letters" to sell you on it, with all the "amazing secrets" is a red flag for sure. For instance, Dr. Dyer or Chopra don't need to do that because they actually have something to say. And...

And the whole "we will show you how to make money on the internet" thing is the same lame formula. Have crappy product, write long vague and overpromising website letter, get people to spend money on the hope that this will save them and that "you too can be rich" idea is just bogus. Check in with your own vibes. Do you really think that someone that needs to market to you in this way will really have something valuable? NOT. I have succumbed to this marketing form letter thing 4 times now and I keep hoping that these people are going to have something valuable. Forget it. Take it from me, if they were that good, they'd be famous already. It's just a bunch of hacks.

I don't mean to be negative, its just that I want to warn you of the empty promises. Frankly, I'm really surprised that such good authors, Dyer, Walsch, Choquette, etc. would be involved with this stuff...

In this book, was mostly quote other authors. Nothing original in my opinion. Go identify your core values, take action and you won't need this book at all. Spend your money somewhere else.

Scott does have some new insights in this book and a few new ways of sharing the same information that others have shared. My suggestion is that, if you've read lots of self-development books, you will get a little out of this. If, however, you've read very little in the way of self-development, you will get lots of great insights and information.

While this book doesn't make my top ten list, it certainly makes the top fifty, for me, of all time best self-development books.

Blessings,

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, August 26, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Power of You!: How YOU Can Create Happiness, Balance, and Wealth (Hardcover)
The book really offers nothing new. The writing style changes significantly in different sections of the book leading me to believe that more than one person was responsible for actually writing the book.

In addition he relies much too heavily on quoting large sections of text from some of his mentors. As a result his ideas do not come across as strong. I never got the feeling that he was really expressing his own feelings. In some sections it seemed like he was just rehashing his mentors view points.

The section on relationships was to me particularily weak. He advanced the idea that the major problems are based what he calls the three legs of the conscious triangel- Feeling, Doing and Thinking. This is an oversimplification. He totally ignores the giver and taker (which often lead to the enabler and the abuser).

The only section where I found any passion was in talking about capitalism. There the voice was strong and clear and some valid points were made.

I did not find anything new or exciting and certainly could not recommend it as a must read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money., November 5, 2006

I bought this book because of Jack Canfield's endorsement. I was more disappointeted that he endorsed this book than I was with the lack of substance. There was nothing new in this book. Sorry....

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much new, November 4, 2006

This book is a collection of platitudes, advertised by much hype. Save your money and read a useful book, like anything by Lester Levenson.

I, too kicked myself for falling for the marketing hype that surrounds this mediocre book. As others have noted, the text is uneven, hints a multiple authors, and is based on little more than repetitions of various ideas from pop psychology and the current interest in law of attraction systems. Feel-good platitudes abound, but little else of any depth. The book has, unfortunately, about the same level of subject depth as an average website.

On a related topic, this book is an example of a very damaging trend in the publishing industry. Publishers can be wooed into printing a book entirely on the strength of the author's "platform" rather than any qualitative judgement of quality. If you have a big enough mailing list, and you can get a bunch of friends to write good Amazon reviews (see the early reviews of this book), you can get a book published no matter how poorly written.

The bright side of this is that I now recognize the techniques used to activate this so-called platform. In the future I will not fall for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some bookls blow you away, others bring 1 or 2 more insights, January 11, 2007
This review is from: The Power of You!: How YOU Can Create Happiness, Balance, and Wealth (Hardcover)
Some of the books I have read, just blew me away. Stephen Covey's "7 Habits" is one of them.

Other books have just brought me 1 or more insights. "The Power of You" is one of them.

The reason why the book didn't blew me away is that it's not highly original and often builds on previous books and ideas. Which is OK as it's better to build on something good than start something bad from scratch. Plus we all have different backgrounds, so other people will learn stuff that was known to me already.

The thing I liked most is the chapter about the Conscious Triangle.

I'm a thinker who has learned to be a do-er over the last years and this book has learned me about the third part, the feeling-side of a person.

It is clear to me that there lies my opportunity for future growth.

The chapter about the new religion of capitalism is crap. Although I do see what he's saying, the way he says it is not well structured. He should have sought help from a financial/business guy for this chapter.

Two quotes from the book that I took with me:

It isn't that life owes us, we have to do something.

But you need the inner conviction that

anything that I can earn, I deserve

Without an active mind, a mind hungry for knowledge,

Life is going to be disappointing.

Happy reading

1.0 out of 5 stars 188 pages of platitudes.... Save your money, August 30, 2006
This review is from: The Power of You!: How YOU Can Create Happiness, Balance, and Wealth (Hardcover)
I'm kicking myself under the desk as I write, because I can't believe I was stupid enough to pay money for this.

I have no vested interest in the success or failure of this book whatsoever, so please believe I'm sincere when I write that paying out for just under 200 pages of mush, with the opportunity to download further mp3s and e-books of affiliated mush, will not help you live a better life.

Go see a movie, get a classic novel from the library, buy a print of a nice painting, but save yourself the pain of feeling like a chump.
