Pretty good battery pack:

* Very well built
* Battery charge/capacity indicators are very nice looking
* I've been impressed by how on/off works: Plug-in device you'd like to charge, push the button to charge. Unplug the device to stop charging, the battery pack will power off on its own. Easy, nothing extra to worry about.
* Overall design is neat - doesn't diminish the iPhone's look when it's next to it
* The shiny plastic doesn't scratch too easy - I've been throwing it in my bag and it still looks fine
* Doubling the battery as an LED flashlight is a bonus - double-press the button to turn it on, double-press to turn it off.
* Comes with a bunch of little cable connector tips. This could be a good thing if you don't already have cables but I use my own 22cm short iPhone cable from CableJive and another supershort microUSB cable by Nokia.
* I use any random microUSB charger to charge the battery since I always have those around - not sure if that's recommended but been working fine for me.

I've used the battery pack to charge my iPhone, T-Mobile Hotspot, Kindle, friends Android phones, and good to know that I can also charge my iPad if needed. Charges the iPhone pretty quick, I can carry both in the pocket since I have the short cable.

Would definitely buy this product again over any other battery pack out there but would also consider the 2900mAh version of it. At the time I was buying, this product had the most capacity in the smallest size - awesome!!

The PowerGen Mobile Juice Pack 5200mAh Mobile Juice Pack Ultra exceeded any expectations I had for it.

Right out of the package, I was impressed with the look and feel of the battery pack. It was quite attractive in appearance with a black, mirrored faceplate, under which were glowing circles of blue light that indicate the charge capacity of the PowerGen. When all 4 lights are lit, you have anywhere from 75-100% charge, 3 lights indicate 50-75%, 2 lights 25-50%, 1 light indicates 0-25% and if 1 light is blinking, you are nearly out of power. No lights = no power.

Once a device is connected to the PowerGen, charging or powering of the device is initiated by one touch of the PowerGen's power button. When you disconnect the device from the PowerGen, the status lights will remain lit for approx 20 seconds at which point the PowerGen will auto shut off. Alternatively, you can depress the power button for about 10 seconds which will shut off the PowerGen.

Perfectly simple in operation and execution, the PowerGen even offers a LED light function which makes it do double duty as a 250 hour flashlight. That's quite amazing if you think about it. Imagine being able to have a flashlight run continuously for 10 days... this could be a very valuable to have with you while camping, for example. You'd have the ability to charge your iPhone or other device and have an emergency light source.

8 different tips are provided to fit a variety of devices. Not all USB powered devices can be fully charged by the PowerGen but many can. Check the description for items that can safely be charged. Devices with high capacity batteries, such as the iPad, will not be able to be fully charged using the PowerGen. You can extend their operating time however by using the PowerGen.

I bought this to serve as a backup battery for my phone during long trips. The charger itself works well; it charges my phone up completely twice over just as fast as an AC adapter. The flashlight is an added bonus. At one point the charger locked up though, and it wasn't until I tried using it again hours later that I got any sort of response from it. Seems to have just been a glitch of some kind.

One big downfall: it comes with a short cable, one side is USB and the other is fitted for all of the charger plugs (micro-USB, iPhone, etc). After not even a week of use the micro-USB head became pretty loose, and at this point it will not stay connected to my phone unless it is physically held in place at just the right angle. Luckily being a nerd I have plenty of USB cable lying around, so I can still use the charger. However the shortest one is still three feet long so it's anything but convenient. Since I bought it with 'fulfillment by Amazon' my only option is to return the whole thing for a refund, so I'm just going to deal with using a longer cable.

Short version: The charger itself is good, but purchase from someone with a better replacement policy, or be prepared to use your own USB cable(s).

The PowerGen 5200mAh is a good quality charger. I also own a New Trent charger which is equally good. The PowerGen is made of better quality materials, looks nicer and is about 1/2 the width of the New Trent. However, the New Trent charger has a very convenient retractable cord and is easier to read while determining the remaining amount of charge. Both work equally well after using for 10 days. Which do I prefer? It's a tie.

Some years ago, I switched to using my iPhone 4 as my primary travel camera. But between Google Maps, GPS, and the camera, battery life became a real issue and forced me to carry a backup battery for the afternoons and for the times I stay in places without electricity. After reading favorable comments, I selected the PowerGen to replace my two smaller capacity batteries and hit the road.

When I travel, I go light, and I try not to take anything that I think might break or fail. The PowerGen weighs in at 4.4 ounces. Since it has a smooth 'pill' shape, it doesn't get snagged on anything in a satchel or pocket with other items. Importantly, it also doesn't have proprietary connectors that are hard to replace in the field. More than that, it seems to charge virtually any USB powered devices, like a friend's mobile phone.

Battery capacity matters, and the PowerGen's 5200mAh is more than 3 times iPhone 4S, which for me translated to about 3 days off-grid. Using the stock Apple cables, the recharge rate is phenomenally fast, seemed about 1% per minute (note that it didn't work with one lower quality aftermarket iPhone/iPad cable). The PowerGen typically charges all the way to 100%, then shuts off - it doesn't seem to trickle charge after that. Not really a big deal, since I typically carry the PowerGen everywhere anyway and it's easy to just press the button and start charging again. I actually found myself using the LED flashlight - it could be brighter, but carrying a dedicated waterproof headlamp isn't a big deal either.

After a month of travel and daily use, the lack of any drama confirms that the PowerGen was a great companion device to my iPhone. It really worked when I needed it and didn't weigh me down when I didn't. I would not hesitate to take the PowerGen with me on further travels. So far, so good - a solid piece of gear!
