4.0 out of 5 stars USB support for Window only, September 28, 2009

We have been using Epson PowerLite S5 for a while now, and it seems to be pretty good. We buy the new version S6 because it has USB support; however, the technical description did not bother point out the the USB display is for Window only while we use Mac. The product is still good, but we wish it has the support for Mac also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epson Powerlite S6 media room projector, August 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PowerLite S6 Multimedia Projector (V11H283420) (Office Product)
Got it in 3 days with free shipping and a great discount from Amazon. (Recently the price has almost doubled.) Set it in front of our old 72" parabolic projector screen, plugged in the power and video cable (We use a separate amp and speakers for sound.) and we watched a movie. (The size of the picture can only be changed by moving the projector back and forth.) Total unpacking and setup time five minutes.

The S6 comes with a durable black nylon semi-soft carrying case with an outside pocket and shoulder strap. It is light enough for a child to carry it. The 'small-but-OK for this 67 yr. old to use' remote is intuitive and has different shaped buttons making it easy to use in low light.

During the movie (it was daytime) we were blinded by white scenes so I cranked down the brightness -6 and noticed the black level was as black as the part of the screen where there wasn't any image. We still thought it was pretty bright so I set the bulb to 'low'. (That also gives you 4,000 hrs. vrs 3,000 hrs. of bulb life.)

Put a beautiful VHS tape I made from a HDTV broadcast and the poor quality of VHS was immediately apparent; I never thought it was that bad with our 30" TV or the old projector. We cannot see pixels at normal viewing distances as one reviewer said. Keystone and focus can be changed to set the projector on a table or hang it from the ceiling (you invert the picture from the menu). We varied 'sharpness' and saw the same effect as with our 30" analog TV - grass and other 'grainy' surfaces look too coarse.

Even on an analog television critical viewer can see quality differences between cameras, during live shows particularly; and DVDs (not just remastered old movies) often differ greatly in quality. So we are quite happy with the S6; it provides a sharp, bright picture with the best contrast I've seen (at least in our setup).

During use two weeks ago one green 'pixel' stayed on. We have a nick in our aluminized screen and I'm always 'looking at the screen' instead of the movie and noticed it. Part way into the movie I forgot about it. The next time I thought to look for it it had gone; perhaps the projector 'fixes itself'. You can Google 'stuck pixel' to read about that.

3.0 out of 5 stars good product; poor manual for Mac users, October 22, 2009

The User's Guide is not friendly to Mac users. The iBook needs an adapter (a mini DVI), but this is not mentioned. I had to call the Philippines' support services and spend a lot of time to learn of this. The frustration of now having to find a Mac store to buy the adapter certainly lessened my excitement and pleasure in receiving my new product. On behalf of other Mac users, come on Epson, you can do better for us if you want our continued business! And to Amazon - you could do a better job of informing Mac users if this is a common problem with Epson and other suppliers.
