I just talked with Toshiba and learned that the DVR 620 does not offer what is called "pass through." So you do have to have the DVR on to watch the TV.

Or you can make a second connection from your tuner to the TV, bypassing the DVR, using, say S-Video, and by switching the TV from one input to the other you can watch your TV without the DVR being on.

Thank you Dennis. Originally Toshiba emailed me that it would work. Now they tell me it does not as you have.

It's not a big deal to me. I just wanted to know if mine was OK.

Does it put any wear on the unit to leave it on all the time?
