You are a female college student checking out courses in Women's Studies. This book is for you. You are a faculty member teaching Women's Studies courses. This book is for you. This book is for women everywhere eager to learn about the powerful political women in world history from ancient times, the Middle Ages, and the present day. The book starts with Ester, in fifth century B.C. Persia. She's "in a position of power" and using "great diligence, dedication, and devotion" she leaves "a mark on Jewish history that would be remembered for all time." In ancient Byzantium, it is the remarkable Empress Theodora, "a champion of women." She pressed for "the rights of women under the law." Altogether there are 28 women discussed in this book, each one seemingly more impressive than all the others. I found the book impressive start to finish. So many of these women have been just names to me. Now I know them all and I have an excellent reference book to turn to when I need it. Never did I realize how much the world owes to these women for their accomplishments .

"Powerful Political Women" is a fascinating narrative of women who have instigated change throughout history. Glimpses of the work of selected women from Queen Esther in the Old Testament to Hillary Clinton are provided to the reader in short, stirring biographies of each. These biographies include those of Cleopatra, Eleanor of Acquataine, Catherine the Great, Mary Wollstonecraft, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Betty Friedan, and Phyllis Schlafly. The sketchees include not only women from the Western world but also some from India, Pakistan, and Burma, The book is easy to read. As one friend said, "I could read a chapter and then put id down and go about my daily tasks, thinking about what I had learned." "Powerful Political Women" could also be used as an excellent reference book in any library that contains writings about Women's Studies.

Just loved this well written book. Never boring, crisp, full of juicy tidbits to mull over. I thought I already knew a lot about these brave trail blazing women but the author was full of surprises. Well researched and I liked her selection of famous women and their background. Joan Flatt is an excellent new historical writer

Sugar and spice and everything nice? Not these Females! What Joan Flatt gives us is an insight into these women's character that is not to be found in your high school history book.
As a male, I must admit that I am always taken aback when I find there are women who are as aggressive as men. Politically Powerful Women will disabuse men of such false notions about the gentle sex. Flatt's extensive research strips away the façade of conventional historic pabulum and reveals their grit.

All of these women were extremely ambitious and determined to succeed despite the fact that many lived in a world far less accepting of women in power than is true today. Many did not hesitate to be ruthless, cruel and even murderous to rise to power, keep a grip on it and ensure the succession of their progeny.
If you like history that brings to life flesh and blood characters, this book is an enjoyable, enlightening read and very worth your time.

Joan Flatt's lively retelling of the lives of famous women is highly readable, entertaining and enticing. The variety of interesting, intriguing women includes highborn women of loose morals, a transvestite Pharaoh, a nude dancer who became an empress, a military leader, and contemporary politicians from around the world. What these women have in common is their ambitious determination and strength in pursuing their goals even against great obstacles. Older girls and young women in the process of choosing their own life goals might find some encouragement and guidelines for determining their own choices of careers and lifestyles. So I recommend this book as a possible gift for them. But anyone who enjoys these brief glimpses of vibrant people may find the book a welcoming gateway to further reading, as I did.

From start to finish, the book pulls the reader from page to page to learn about the next "powerful, political woman" featured. The start of each chapter grabs the reader's attention with a picture or photograph of the woman, a quote from the featured woman, and a title of the nature of the woman's power and influence. The variety of subjects chosen was interesting not only by learning about each of the women, but also by considering the author's choices of women to be featured. This book was well researched, and it was freestanding politically as the content of the book did not have an underlying political message or reveal the author's political preferences. Bravo to Joan McMahon Flatt on a great accomplishment through this marvelous book!
