I went to the James Weldon Johnson Children Library in Harlem to find this book. It allowed my child and I to spend time together and learn about our history.

This is an interesting book for middle school or high school. The graphics are simple, but interesting and striking. The sketches of the African American "heroes," or promoters of freedom from slavery and equality are simple, but effective and professional. The charcoal portraits are excellent inspiration for teens, and can be used to help encourage young people to try their best at designing portraits.

Teachers can use the book in social studies, political science classes, in art class, or in history. The teacher can assign a (short) chapter for the student to read, and then have him or her to create the design of the African American portrait, with a summary of how that spokesperson influenced others towards freedom and equality for former slaves and descendants of slaves in America.

It is an unusually, simply designed book that provides information in bite-sized chunks, just long enough to be able to be digested by the average middle school or high school student. Good book for the classroom.

The book stirs curiosity among high school students. I have displayed the book in class numerous times to find the booked placed in a different place after each class. Some thought provoking words that really get students thinking about life.
