Finally got my log splitter hooked up and running. It was a bit painful to find the hoses and get the right connections for my tractor. I ran it for about 5 hours this weekend and it works great! I have it connected to my JD2320 compact utility tractor and I only came across one piece of cherry that I couldn't split, (which contained a large cross branch in it). I split maple, cherry, apple, pine, you name it, we have it and this machine went through it smooth and efficient. Some of the pieces were logs over 16 inches diameter and I would split them once and then roll over and split the other way to make the first split. It worked great, don't limit yourself by the description of only being able to split smaller stuff! Tractor has plenty of power and being able to split both ways definitely is a great benefit to make the job faster. I would recommend that the top bracket be reinforced a little more as mine is a little bent from the torque on the big pieces. I straightened it out, but does make me concerned for the long term. Definitely recommend this as a great addition to any home wood burning/cutting people.

This log splitter surprised me with its abilities. It is understandable that this smaller splitter can handle tough jobs when considering that the blade is shorter and thinner than larger log splitters, so it is easier to drive it through the wood. It cut everything reasonable, but did stall when trying to cut through a knotted oak fork, which was a test I didn't expect it to pass, anyway. I didn't use a stop watch, but it was fast enough for me on my Hinomoto with a 5 gpm hydraulic pump, running at idle so it was less than 5 gallons. Sometimes when splitting toward the valve the log would slip or spread out onto the valve guard, but the guard is sturdy enough that nothing was damaged. Build quality is good, and the splitter never showed signs of bending or breaking, even with much larger than specified logs. The main limitations with this splitter are the 18 inch dimension, and since it is horizontal it can be difficult to get large logs up to cutting position. Assembly is required, including basic nuts and bolts and hydraulic connections. Hydraulic lines to the tractor are not included. The seller, Northern Tool, was very good to work with.
