4.0 out of 5 stars Chester Thompson's solo POWERHOUSE, October 24, 2008

This review is from: Powerhouse (Audio CD)
I recently learned about Chester Thompson's solo effort POWERHOUSE from my friend, Pacific Northwest based jazz organist Louis Pain. Pain, who plays with Mel Brown's B3 Quartet, is himself an able protege of Thompson. I was long an admirer of Thompson's work with Tower of Power. His funky grooves and solid backing helped to propel the soul-jazz-funk based band. POWERHOUSE was originally released as an LP, but its recent release as a CD gives the work the potential to be rediscovered by a entirely new host of listeners. For those who love the Hammond B3, Thompson's POWERHOUSE will be a welcome addition to their collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Santana & Tower of Power keyboard player., May 4, 2006
This review is from: Powerhouse (Audio CD)
Interesting album. Chester Thompson doing a power organ session just before joining TOP and eventually Santana. He credits this session for his being asked to join TOP. There are some fine moments where you can hear Chester's distinctive approach to the Hammond B3. It's two-track analog sound recorded in basically one take, but if you're a fan of this genius of the organ, you will be very glad to have this album.

This is a killer CD that features Tower of Power's heart and soul, organist Chester Thompson, in a jazz setting. His unique voice comes across in these 4 original tunes. It's worth it!
