4.0 out of 5 stars Strong enough so far, July 3, 2007

I have very limited space so a "cage"-type squat rack just wouldn't do for me. Also, I do reps with a little under 400 pounds so it couldn't be a rinky-dink thin-walled round-tube pair of uprights like you see bolted onto cheap weight benches. This rack is a decent compromise for those of us with a little space and the desire to squat fairly heavy in that space. Any heavier and I'd be wise to go to the gym and have spotters on hand anyway. In my opinion, this was a solid purchase I'd recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, June 19, 2008

Sturdy as can be. However I'd recommend putting the back end of the feet against a wall or something or it can shift around a bit when you're putting the bar back on the rack after a heavy bench. Or at least have it on a rubber mat. It would be good to have a spotter with you so it doesn't tilt back if you slam your weight back on the rack so it doesn't tip over. If you're careful that's not an issue, or if you wanted to somehow bolt it into your floor. :)

Also the height-adjust holes are spaced a little far apart so it's not that precise as to how you might like your benching, about 3 inches apart. I haven't tried it for squats yet. You'd definitely need a spotter for squats because obviously there's nothing to catch the weight for you if you can't stand back up with a heavy weight. It took me 15 minutes to put the thing together myself using 2 wrenches.

For the price though it's definitely solid. You can get a Gold's Gym olympic 45# bar at Walmart for $45, same bar they use at normal gyms, and olympic plates are there too for about $0.80/pound or find them at Sports authority or something if they go on sale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, sturdy squat rack for your home gym, January 2, 2010

I bought this item for my garage Crossfit gym. Its a good value for the price. It was easy to assemble. The photo does not show the rack at full extension, but it does extend higher for back squats, front squats, and shoulder presses. I also bought a flat bench to go along with this item for bench pressing. Just be sure to brace the squat rack against a wall or something sturdy to prevent it from sliding back when racking the weight on the bench press. (And have a spotter!)

The only modification I made to this rack was to pad the hooks to prevent scratching of my olympic bar. The hooks are somewhat small and I would prefer higher backstops on them, but they work fine as is. I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend it for home gym use.

The most weight I've had racked on this product was 250lbs. At that load, there weren't any problems with the rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice piece- but you need a wider barbell, June 26, 2007
Very solid- easy to assemble. Arrived quickly. I didn't realize that I needed a larger barbell however. You need 45" between the plates for it to fit on this rack. I found one on Amazon, a 7' barbell, but now I have to spend another 50 bucks for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful piece of equipment, October 26, 2009

I initially bought this rack and it was shipped promptly. The rack is great and sturdy although light-weight and hence moves around a bit. As another reviewer as suggested, should be put against a wall to ensure you are racking the bar properly. For reasons not related this or to the quality of this product (which is excellent), I purchased a power rack from the same company (Body Solid Powerline) two weeks after purchasing this product. What I found surprising was that this product has almost the same foot-print as the power rack. If you were planning to save floor space by purchasing this squat rack, I would suggest you buy the power rack for a higher price and get the additional benefits of better safety and larger variation of exercises it allows. Of course it is obvious that the power rack is a lot taller and this unit is better for low ceilings. This may seem obvious but I hope this prevents somebody from making the same mistake I did! Otherwise, this is an excellent addition to a home gym.

This company has done a nice job of outsourcing to China and maintaining excellent quality control. The welding is first-rate, the gauge of the steel is adequate for the task at hand, the painting is very nice, the packaging is well-conceived, and the design is simple, yet elegant. Assembly is a snap, although you will need two 17mm, or 11/16" or adjustable wrenches. My only suggestion would be to add some kind of anti-slip rubber strips for the bottoms of the base members. If you want to do leg squats and bench presses. This is your baby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the money, December 28, 2006
This rack will let you do decline bench presses, squats, and everything in-between. I've had mine for about a month and am reasonably happy with it. The adjustment pin system is a little annoying, and the forward flange of the mouth of the rack could angle forward (or the whole thing could be wider) to make racking easier. If I had 4-500 bucks, I'd get a rack with fixed openings so you don't need to mess with adjusting the height. However, for the money, this is a decent piece of equipment and will do the job.

If you're looking for a good buy and sturdy rack that won't take up a lot of space, this is it!! This is well worth the money. I'm a tell you what I wish others would have included in their reviews: WHAT YOU SPECIFICALLY NEED TO PUT THIS TOGETHER! One will definitely need a STANDARD WRENCH - this you FIT against the four NYLON LOCK NUTS as an anchor while you use the SOCKET WRENCH (1/4" RATCHET HANDLE with a 11/16" SOCKET) - this will do the actual screwing for the four M10X70 hex bolts).

Without a socket wrench to accompany the standard wrench, you won't be able to force the groves on the hex bolt to cut through the nylon on the lock nut! Once its screwed on, the bolt will be reinforced against the nylon, making it secure.

Pieces:

4 - M10X70 HEX HEAD BOLTS
4 - M10 NYLON LOCK NUTS
4 - M10 (I.D) WASHERS
2 - GRAVITY PINS (8240-021)
2 - 50X45 NYLON BUSHINGS (9211-030)
4 - 2"X2"X1.8T END CAPS (9211-005)

2 arms that support the barbell and 2 verticle stands that the arms will go into as well as 1 horizontal bar that supports the arms & stands. If any trouble and or assistance is needed, one can reach their technical support dept: 1-800-556-3113.

Enjoy the rack!
