Partition Magic (PM) is a utility program that operates on the hard drive partitions that contain file systems. If your data is stored on a separate partition it makes backing up and restoring data easier. It can also change a FAT partition to the more efficient FAT32 file system. PM also handles other file systems: NTFS, HPFS, Linux Ext2, and Linux Swap. You should back up your hard drive before using PM in case of unforeseen events.

You can install PM in Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0. Chapter 1 tells how to use the PM Main Window to create a new partition, redistribute free space, reclaim wasted space, and prepare for a new operating system. Other options are explained. Chapter 2 describes use of the Wizards to perform operations. Chapter 3 explains the hard drive operations: Integrity Checks; Resizing and Moving Partitions; Creating Partitions; Deleting Partitions; Changing Partition Labels; Formatting Partitions; Copying Partitions; Checking Partitions; Getting Information; and Scanning for Errors.

Advanced Operations are discussed in Chapter 4. You can: Change a Drive Letter; Retest Bad Sectors; Hide and Unhide Partitions; Resize the Root Directory; Activate a Partition; and Resize Clusters. Chapter 5 tells how to convert partitions. FAT can be converted to FAT32, HPFS, or NTFS. FAT32 can be converted to FAT. The PM Utilities are described in Chapter 6 . `DriveMapper' can change drive letter references in shortcuts, initialization files, and registry entries. The highest drive letter should be changed first when you add a drive letter. If a drive letter was removed change the lowest first (p.99). `MagicMover' can move applications from one partition to another. You can configure `BootMagic' and IBM Boot Manager; or create a Rescue Diskette. `PartitionInfo' provides diagnostic reports.
