If you're interested in Santeria, and perhaps Voudou and related traditions, this is an enormously helpful reference book.

Each of the Orishas is listed with corresponding Catholic saints (and their detailed histories and feast days), colors, days of the week, offerings, necklaces, and more. You'll also find a few basic rituals for purposes related to each Orisha.

This is an important addition to your library, for information that is unique, easy-to-use, and adds substance to the mysteries of Afro-Caribbean traditions.

Sadly to say Migene Gonzales Wippler has a bad reputation in the Lucumi Tradition, and many give her a really bad rep. Especially on her books on the religion. I do not know her personally, and I am not hear to criticize her work. But to be honest with you it was the books of Mgene Gonzales Wippler that has opened the doors for many Aborishas today. In fact I know a few Iyawos, and a few Babalorishas and Iyalorishas menores like my self who have stated the same things. Okay so with that said, she has published two good books and I must say this one is one of them. I just like it, and I remember it being such a big reference book for me, in those early years of my interest in la religion. There are no big secrets revealed here, just simple Orishas facts, that are commonly known to many of the various Ramas. I recommend this book for the beginners, a book that can be past down to the younger generation. We all have to start somewhere; well this is one of those books to start of with...

The only beef i have with this book is that she wrote all the offerings in spanish! Like I understand spanish! Even my friend from Ecudar did not understand the dialect. But Ms. Wippler reveals very good information and the legends of each Orisha. She gives you each Orisha's color(s), number(s) and day(s). This is the book to get if you are interested in the Orishas. Its not at all about the religion of Santaria its all about the Orishas. This book and Santaria by the same auther makes a good pair. This is a very good book on the Orishas.

This is yet another great one by wippler, She presents alot of information about each orisha which is elsewhere difficult to find. It has lists of each orishas colors, paths, invocations and chants, names, herbs, and more. Its a highly informative and impressive book. I dont care what anyone sais about wippler, shes a wonderfull author and deserves much credit.

No big secrets revealed. No harm, no foul. General information, yet for a newcomer, enough to explain the basics. (Worked for me when I was a "newbie") Sadly, for aleyos, there really isn't anyone pounding down the door to teach them about the Religion. One has to start somewhere. Until there is a "Santeria for Beginners" Class, books and what can be ferretted out on-line (Buyer, Beware!) will be a couple of ways for newcomers to learn.

a very informative book, and helpful for those just beginning to explore Santeria. Migene gives information about Orishas other than the main 7 African Powers. The information given about each orisha is: syncretism, cosmic force, representation, attributes, archtype, paths, initiation, and a legend. Highly recommended

One of the most intriguing aspects of Witchcraft and Wicca is that one can work with any group of deities that she sees fit. However African-Americans Witches are hard pressed to find material written about the West African godforms known as the Orishas.

This book fits the bill perfectly. Although written from the viewpoint of Santeria, this book makes the Orishas accessible and comphrensible to followers of Wicca.

Information is broken into modules which present the attributes of each Orisha such as elemental rulerships, personality traits and temperments, "job" descriptions, day, color and herbal associations.

Admittedly, Wiccans don't work with the Orishas in the same context as the followers of Santeria or it's parent religion Ifa but experienced Witches will have no trouble incorporating the information presented here into their religious and magickal practice.

Afterall It IS Yemaya who is "Queen of Witches".

A decent basic primer, the controversy around the author's initiations notwithstanding. It's a decent introduction for the beginner. Worth the money.

This book is well written. It provides detailed Orisha information that other books only piecemeal together. If you want to know the orishas and their paths, buy this book.

Very good explanation from Migene. Like most of her books this one is very good. it complements "Santeria-The Religion". Explains all the mayor orishas with lots of info on them
