5.0 out of 5 stars Powers Rules...
Powers, written by Brian Michael Bendis, is one of the best books on the stands today. I started reading Powers shortly after it started some 10 to 12 years ago, and the book has continued to entertain. These Definitive editions are the best way to read these stories as the pages are much larger and higher quality than the comic it is re-printed from. Once picked up,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Bendis...Not Great Bendis
I have been following Mr. Bendis since POWERS #1. In fact, the week it came out I met him at the Pittsburgh Comicon and I fanboy'd out a bit to him about how incredible his ear for dialog was. After that I picked up his earlier works and whatever came after for a few years. High points to me were TORSO (so damn interesting) and FORTUNE and GLORY (Still one of the funniest...

Once picked up, the book is impossible to put down. This edition is another excellent entry in the Powers Universe. Bendis and Oeming really know how to tell a story, if only F/X would get this to the TV screen already.
If you like mature, high quality stories, than Powers is for you...

I have been following Mr. Bendis since POWERS #1. In fact, the week it came out I met him at the Pittsburgh Comicon and I fanboy'd out a bit to him about how incredible his ear for dialog was. After that I picked up his earlier works and whatever came after for a few years. High points to me were TORSO (so damn interesting) and FORTUNE and GLORY (Still one of the funniest books I've ever read). I've picked up the Definitive collections of his POWERS work over the past year and you can tell that even though this is his baby still, and he loves it...it's not his driving force anymore. It's good...but not great. With masterminding several of the major Marvel events over the past several years, and steering the massive ship that is the Avengers line of books I can totally understand what is happening here. He has so many outlets now for saying what he wants to say as a writer that not all the "great stuff" is going to make it into POWERS all the time. At the end of the day this is still a good volume, but not up to the first three.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great story from start to finish, October 23, 2012

Powers has always been an odd book. It is very wordy, very story driven. Bendis is able to tell a story and immerse you into the world of the Powers universe. This was a long story but we finally get a conclusion on Deena's path of destruction. It had a heroic feel at the end yet still had some of that real world unfairness and a sense of "what will happen now". In real life just because you finished an important project, got married to your long desired love, or even finally beat that video game you have been fighting with non-stop every night...the victory is short lived, because life continues and your story isn't over.

Now, if you got through all of that psycho-babble I'll just end this with, Bendis is a fantastic writer, and this story is a great tale from end to end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oeming's artwork is getting worse and worse, October 20, 2012

This review is from: Powers: The Definitive Collection, Vol. 5 (Hardcover)
I continue reading Powers for the story, which Bendis is still filling with interesting twists and themes. Sometimes the meditations on power, vigilantism, celebrity, and what people are willing to give up for safety is truly deep, and this collection is no exception. Unfortunately, Oeming's artwork rarely rises to the occasion. His art on Powers has slowly been declining for a while, and this collection is full of lazy visual storytelling and many panels and sequences that are borderline incomprehensible. Most of the time, it looks like he pounds out an issue in a weekend with a Sharpie. It's sad because the noir visual style and the fascinating writing continue to present so much possibility.
