4.0 out of 5 stars Happy so far, February 19, 2008
This review is from: Powertec P-PR Power Rack (Sports)
I have only used this for about four workouts but I like it so far. I upgraded from a "body by jake olympic bench rack" because I wanted to lift heavier without the danger of dropping the weight on myself. Easy to assemble. I use it for squats, straight leg deadlifts, standing overhead press, pullups - if I lift my legs up, dips, bench press. Only negative is that the paint scratches easily. But then again I didn't buy it to look at.

Update: After 3 months of use 3 times a week I am still pleased with this purchase.

Update: 2+ yrs of use. Showing a little more wear but no complaints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Home Gym Equipment, October 22, 2008

Buy this if you work out at home--it is essential. A utility bench is also essential (but the Powertec bench is overpriced--look at your local sporting goods store or on craigslist for a bench).

I purchased this in 10/2008 for $499 (w/ free shipping). It arrived within a week.

I love it. The rack is totally solid, and was easy to assemble. I was sold on this rack because of the dip bars and pull-up bars--and they are better than I imagined. The dip bars are angled and can be attached in either direction (pointing in or out) so you can do wide dips or triceps dips regardless of your size. After working out with a makeshift home gym for over a year (sawhorses, doing dips on ladders) this rack has changed everything--I am already lifting much heavier weight just knowing that the rack is there to catch if I fail.

Seriously--if you work out at home, buy this. It will change your life and save you from injury.

I love this thing. It's solid, well-made, and even pretty cool looking. I like doing sets to failure, especially on bench press, and this rack inspires complete confidence despite the fact that I don't have a spotter. It's probably the best investment I've ever made in fitness equipment. As soon as I've got some spare cash I'll be adding the lat tower attachment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid performer for home gym, May 29, 2009

This review is from: Powertec P-PR Power Rack (Sports)
I have had the P-PR Power Rack for about 4 months now - with 2-3 workouts a week, it is probably long enough to give an honest review.

What I like:

a) Solid build - feels like it could take as much weight as I could handle in a squat/bench scenario.

b) Very easy to put together. I did it by myself no problem.

c) Fairly light weight and smaller size - I can move this easily by myself.* See what I don't like.

c) Nice pull up and dipping bars* See what I don't like.

d) I would likely buy this again.

What I don't like:

I don't have any real concerns with the rack, but there are a few things I have had to make due with. Nothing here is a deal breaker.

a) I am 5'10", I cannot due a military press inside of the rack due to the racks shorter height. This may be a plus for those with lower ceilings. Pressing outside of the rack is of course the easy solution.

b) I am 200lbs. Due to the racks smaller size/weight, I do experience some movement if the rack is empty and I am doing dips or pullups, especially if using a dip belt (+20-45 lbs). I can lay a 35# or 45# plate against the bottom of the rack and it will cancel the tilting. Again, not a deal breaker. It should be noted that my rack is on short carpet - a less than optimal situation.

This would be an easy 5 stars if not for the 2 above points, but like I said, I could buy the product again and be happy with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great rack for the money, May 5, 2008

I'm so please with this rack. I lift alone (my girlfriend won't get up at 6 a.m. to spot me!) so the security of a rack is great. I feel the quality for the money is spot-on. They powder coat could be thicker but I'm not in a show room so why do I care? Also, it's not like I'm careless and banging weights around everywhere.

Assembly was simple and I did it alone.

I purchased the lat tower option and must say I'm pleased with it as well. My instructions only had an exploded view (I don't know if they come with the step by step instructions) but I still figured it out in about an hour total. The pulley system is simple and not convoluted. One of the pulleys was crushed in shipping but I called on Monday and had it replaced for free in three days. Great support!

I paid $349.99 for each shipped to my house in bfe so it was a super deal. The next day the price was at $499. I still think it's worth the money for the rack.

What can I say? This thing is solid and doesn't look ugly at home. My only complaint is that I have to move those little handles that hold the bar in place when switching between regular and incline bench presses. I wish it would come with two pairs of handles.

BTW, putting it together was a breeze. Only one size of nuts and bolts are used. Less tools, fast assembling.

I purchased this rack and am VERY PLEASED with it. It was very straight forward to assemble - I did it solo. Seems very solid.

I really like the dip bars. They are well thought out and taper inward, so you can find the width that works best for you. Very stable also.

The chin bar is also good. If you are heavy or add weight on the chins, you may want to have the bar with a little weight on it to avoid any slight forward motion of the rack. Has not been a problem for me yet - but only doing body weight chins so far.

The frame and spotting pins are very solid.

Another benefit was the height of this unit. It is a little more compact - and shorter - than many units. That helped it fit better in my small (townhouse) garage.

Very pleased with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Lifting Deal Ever., April 18, 2008
This review is from: Powertec P-PR Power Rack (Sports)
Purchased for $349 with free super saver shipping. This is an awesome piece of equipment with incredible quality, even at twice the price. Dip and pull-up bars included which saves space and money. If you add the high low pully, matching utility bench, barbell & weight, and a set of dumbells you suddenly have a very respectable hard-core gym. The grey baked on paint is prone to scraping when moving the spotting arms, but the scratches are silver, so hardly noticable. Still, this is the best power rack for the money-a steal at $349 shipped!

I work out at home in my basement. I don't have a spotter. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago, I suffered an injury when my bench decided to drop into decline mode while performing tricep presses. Then a couple of weeks ago while doing bench press, I had a scare when I couldn't get weights off my chest. So, finally I did the research and decided on this rack. I am really happy with my decision. This is a very solid and nice looking rack. I can finally do exercises to failure and do squats that I have been neglecting to do. If you are thinking about getting a rack, you better decide quickly, prices for steel are going up and as a result equipment like this is going up in price. I paid less than what this is currently selling for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Commercial Quality Power Rack, May 7, 2009
This review is from: Powertec P-PR Power Rack (Sports)
This power rack is truly commercial quality as is all powertec equipment. I purchased this piece directly from the manufacturer for 449.00 along with the olympic/narrow bench for 249.00 and paid $43 shipping. I suggest checking out the manufacturer site first as you may be able to get it cheaper.

The rack is very solid. It does not sway or move during use. It holds 1,000 pounds which is great for all users whether you are a new lifter, or a seasoned veteran or elite athlete.

The rack is made for home use so it is shorter than a commercial power rack and the space inside the rack is smaller. There is plenty of space though. I use it primarily for squats and works great. The pull up bars are ok. The positioning is great but the covers for them are not very thick and the bars are pretty thin. I wrap a small hand towel around the bars to make them thicker. The dips bars are very solid. Make sure you use the dip bars inside the rack, not to the outside as if you use them to the outside you the rack will sway slightly.

This rack is a great piece of equipment and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid power rack for home use. I use this piece in my personal training studio and it truly is a quality piece of equipment. Because of the quality with this and the olympic bench I buy all my strength equipment from Powertec.
