Book Description

October 2003
On a cold December night, two members of an international terrorist organization meet at a French Quarter restaurant in New Orleans to finalize plans for one of the deadliest attacks ever on the United States of America: a release of the smallpox virus during the upcoming Super Bowl at the New Orleans Superdome. A beautiful young woman joins them the next day at a remote fishing camp on Lake Pontchartrain, selected by the cell leader as the perfect headquarters and hiding place for their activities. Masterminded by a powerful, reclusive terrorist leader whom the United States government believes to be dead, it's the attack America thought would never happen and is woefully ill-prepared to handle.

Margaret Lawhon creates a fast-paced thriller that takes you from the banks of Lake Pontchartrain to the isolated bioterrorist laboratories of the former U.S.S.R. to the glamour of Rio de Janeiro's Carnaval. The Poydras Project combines a cautionary tale for our time with a story of how love and loss can converge with monumental consequences.

"Best New Writer: Margaret Lawhon's The Poydras Project is a page-turner that will whet readers appetites for more." -- Greg Langley, The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La)

About the Author

A professional journalist for more than 20 years, Margaret Lawhon has been writing about health and health-related topics since 1995, first as the medical reporter at WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and most recently as a freelance journalist working in both the broadcast and print media. As medical reporter for WBRZ, Lawhon won numerous awards from both the medical and television communities, including five Excellence in Medical Reporting Awards and three Awards of Merit from the Louisiana State Medical Society and the East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society. In 1996 Lawhon received the Jacques I. Minnotte Fellowship Award for Medical Reporting from the national Radio and Television News Directors Association. Until 1999, when she launched her freelance career, Lawhon was a regular contributor to NewsOne, a special feature franchise of ABC News, making her health reports available to ABC's affiliate television stations across the country.

In addition to her work in the medical reporting field, Lawhon writes a monthly column for the Baton Rouge city-social publication InRegister. She is a member of the Screen Actor's Guild and has had feature roles in a number of films, including Schizopolis, Dead Man Walking, Madame le Consul (a French television production) and the recent adaptation of the John Grisham bestseller, Runaway Jury.

In her spare time Lawhon studies French and oil painting and enjoys hunter-jumper horseback riding with her six-year-old thoroughbred. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Lawhon lives in Baton Rouge with her husband, attorney Martin A. Schott.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Suspense--High Writing, January 31, 2004
By
Lonnie Wascom (Hammond, LA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Poydras Project (Hardcover)
I have been thrilled to find a book that is filled with suspense and written in a high-quality manner! Lawhon's journalism background, particularly as a medical reporter, provides her with the knowledge and experience needed to produce such a book. And the writing--it is good to read a book today that isn't laced throughout with graphic language, gratuitous sex, and horrific violence. The theme of the book, bioterrorism, is enough in and of itself to keep the reader glued to the text. The fact is, for a book to be truly suspenseful and scary, the reader must believe that the writer's thesis could truly happen. I believe Ms. Lawhon has given us just that kind of novel--a suspenseful story that I believe could truly happen! I highly recommend this book.
