4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty nice once you get the right TTS voices April 30, 2013
Verified Purchase
When I first tried this app the voice was excruciating to listen to as many others have mentioned. However, in the description it says that it supports IVONA TTS. I decided to check out IVONA and see if that helped. I downloaded the free US and UK voices and they all sound pretty good.

Unfortunately they are not available on the Amazon App store. If you have a device that can access the Google play store just search for "IVONA Text-to-Speech HQ", download it, then open it and install the voices of your choice - I tried the US english "Kendra" and UK "Amy" and they sound great and are free.

After you download the IVONA Text-to-Speech HQ and the voices you want, exit all programs and go to your Android "Settings" → "Language & Input" → scroll down to "Speech" and tap "Text-to-speech output" → select "IVONA TTS" → then choose which voice you want it to use.

This made a huge difference in the voice quality on my phone.

Please note that this method will not work on the Kindle Fire - I even tried side-loading, but it would not work on my stock 1st generation Kindle Fire.

Pros:
- Reads PDFs fairly accurately.
- Once you get a good TTS engine it sounds pretty good.

Cons:
- Text is cut off of the screen as it reads. If you are reading and listening at the same time this could be a problem.
- Individual words sometimes do not get separated correctly so that 2-3 words can be all together without any spaces between them.
- I tried to get it to read a PDF of a scientific journal article and it really had trouble figuring out the text: it would put only a few words or sentences on each page. It seems to do much better with just plain text.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile app but needs instructions April 30, 2013
Verified Purchase
I was excited to see this app; I'm always excited when a non-game appears as the Free App of the Day.  But I was disappointed to see the reviews.  However, most of the reviews cite the "horrible" text-to-speech voice.  I had to try it just to find out how bad the voice was.

Answer:  I don't find the voice bad--seems about the same as the usual Kindle text-to-speech voice to me.  I found it okay to listen to. At least as okay as the text-to-speech ever is.  Note that another review talks about switching the voice using a sideloaded voice.  I don't think that's possible on the Kindle Fire; I looked for the options in the Fire's settings that the other review mentioned for Android devices and I don't think they're there.

I think the app actually works pretty well; but it badly needs instructions.  Note that it reads more than just PDF files.  I think for the people who really need to be able to have PDFs, Word docs and DMR-free ePubs read to them on their Fires, it's worth learning the app.

The real negative to me is the lack of instruction.  I'll hit the highlights here.

When you open the app, you'll have to agree to a long EULA (end user license agreement).  Once past that, you'll basically see a blank screen with four icons at the top representing four different tabs:  speaker, folder, bookmarks, settings.

When in any of the four "tabs" at the top, you can swipe the side/bottom menu bar and tap on the menu icon for options for that "tab."

You'll want to go first to the second tab--the folder.  It will default to show you the list of folders on at the "sdcard" level.  If you've played files before, it will also show you a list of recent files played.

3.0 out of 5 stars OMG the voices in my head are screaming for mercy. April 29, 2013
Verified Purchase
First off this is a great idea for an app, unfortunately the voice is quite annoying. But I still intend to keep this program to read over my short story's. So I can tell if there are many mistakes and because anything longer would be defined as torture under the Geneva convention.

Pros:
Reads the pdfs I have perfectly.
Well written almost flawless execution.
Can change the voice through IVONA TTS if your not using a kindle fire.

Cons:
Super annoying voice.
Has no tutorial.
Has some reading issues like it reads frames as "vertical bar".
Interface is poorly written

Honestly if it where not for that annoying voice tearing away what sanity I have left at 1 am this would be an amazing app. But its best use might be proof reading something you have written as the annoying voice makes you pay attention. So for now it gets 2 stars if they choose to upgrade the voice I will revisit this and upgrade my review.*update 4/30* if your on something other then a kindle fire you can upgrade the voice through IVONA TTS(which you can download off the google play store). For someone off the kindle fire I would give this program a 4 star. But as I am still on a kindle and it still driving me batty, ill only upgrade my overall review to 3 star as I understand some people are not on a kindle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great potential, lack of execution February 21, 2012

I am a commuter and have countless PDF documents that I need to read. I purchased this hoping it would allow me to listen to them on my drives. It has a lot of potential, it really does. It just lacks in execution.

The voice is awful, in order to get a decent voice, they want you to purchase additional ones at $3--so just as much as the app! The app also does not skip over headers and footers, so be prepared to hear copyright notices read over and over.

This app may be worth buying if they keep developing it up and you wait a few revisions. For now, I would advise just wait until something better comes along. For 99 cents this would be worth it--not for $3.
