Editorial Reviews

Review

"For anyone who has been horrified by the lopsided life that remains after a bout of pruning, gardening writer Geoff Hodge has some gentle advice: Pruning is both an art and a science. You’ll be better equipped to take on the challenge after reading the chapter on pruning in Practical Botany for Gardeners. . . . Botanical illustrations on almost every page add a decorative touch, and profiles of botanical artists pay tribute to those who make plants come alive on the page."
(Boston Globe)

"A gentle guide to the green world . . . organized precisely how a nonbotanist would need it done. Chapters introduce the plant kingdom and how botanists classify it; tackle growth, form and function; and take you inside a plant to understand how its cells, nutrition and hormones actually function. Others explore reproduction, soil, pests and disorders. . . It's a beautiful book."
(Denver Post)

Format: Hardcover
From outward appearances a lovely book, but for readability it doesn't compare with Brian Capon's delightful "Botany for Gardeners, 3rd Edition," which I highly recommend. I failed to get through Hodges' entire book with its overload of plain scientific facts. It could be a useful reference except for a woefully poor index. Archival botany prints enliven the page layouts but aren't as helpful as the excellent photos in Capon's book. The diagrams included need more detail to be of real value.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Martha Brooks on March 24, 2014
Format: Hardcover
The author, a freelance journalist, has pieced together an impressive number of botanical facts but fails to emotionally engage the reader in the wonders of plant life. Antique botanical illustrations are pretty, but do little to shed light on the subject matter at hand. Picture captions are scarce. The index is incomplete. The small type difficult to read. Compared with Brian Capon's more instructive and readable "Botany for Gardeners" this is a disappointing product.

This is a great help in understanding many things I have not really understood. I'm no botanist by any means but this book gives clear direction in pruning, insects, diseases etc. Being able to reference this book and say NOW I finally feel ok about what I need to do. I have so much underlined and pages marked I can refresh my mind real fast. I think it's the best book for gardening that I have. It's well worth buying and the illustration is great.

A quite practical volume that holds a lot of good information for one who either wishes to find a particular fact or is learning about botany for the first time.
