Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Ray Buckland has been actively involved in the occult for over fifty years and was responsible for introducing Gardnerian Wicca to the United States. He has written over two dozen books; has had numerous articles published in magazines and newspapers; has appeared on many TV shows; and has worked as a technical advisor on movies and stage productions. I am very lucky to know Ray, and the metaphysical world should be thankful that he shares his learning with us.
Practical Candleburning Rituals is one of his most popular books, and rightly so. Hundreds of thousands of people use it as a guide to simple, practical, powerful, and usable magic on a daily basis. There are three reasons you should use this book, too.
First, if you have never done any sort of magic before, this book is an ideal introduction to the subject from a practical point of view.
Second, although many people are involved in Pagan religions, many others are involved in Christianity. Most of the rituals in this book are presented in two ways, one for Pagans and one for Christians. This book can really be used by just about anyone.
Third, by practicing the techniques in this book, you'll learn the underpinnings of magic. In no time you'll be able to come up with your own rituals based on the ones listed.
When you can design your own rituals, and be successful with them, you will truly be a magician. And the place to start is with this book.

More About the Author

In 1962 I came to the U.S. from England, where I'd written comedy scripts and was personal scriptwriter for a popular British comedian. Interested in the occult for over fifty years, in the past forty years I've had over forty books published (fiction and non-fiction), with nearly two million copies in print and translated into seventeen foreign languages. I've received awards for my work and had books featured in several national book clubs. I was Technical Director for movies, working with Orson Wells and William Friedkin (director of The Exorcist). Of Romany descent, I'm an authority on Gypsies and have written several books on them. I've lectured at colleges and universities and been the subject of articles in newspapers and magazines: New York Times, Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, New York Sunday News, National Observer, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Look Magazine, Cosmopolitan, True, and others.

I've appeared on national television and radio talk shows and been on BBC-TV, England, RAI-TV, Italy, and CBC-TV, Canada. I appeared extensively on stage in England and played small character parts in movies in America. I taught courses at colleges and universities and have been a featured speaker at conferences and workshops. I'm listed in reference works including Contemporary Authors, Who's Who In America, Men of Achievement, and International Authors' and Writers' Who's Who.

Latest books are The Weiser Field Guide to Ghosts, The Spirit Book, Buckland's Book of Spirit Communications, Wicca For One, and Cards of Alchemy. A DVD version of my Wicca video has also recently been released: Rebirth of the Old Religion. A prolific author, I'm currently working on my autobiography. Today I live on a farm in north-central Ohio. Photo Credit: Gregory Ford

3.0 out of 5 stars Practical Candleburning Rituals, August 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Candleburning Rituals: Spells and Rituals for Every Purpose (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series) (Paperback)
Although this book seems to be targeted towards a larger audience in general, and not so much towards Pagans and/or Wiccans like myself, I found this book to have its good points but it can be contradictory in explaining certain things. For example, the author lists black candles for evil intents. I find fault with this because black candles are for banishing evil and for providing protection against evil. In all the books I have on candle magick, black is listed as protective. Also, some of the spells seem to have negative intents like the spell for arousing jealousy. No matter what spiritual path you are on, causing someone harm via jealousy or via negativity is ethically wrong and very dangerous because it will come back to you times three, i.e, the law of karma.

Nevertheless, if your spiritual path is Wiccan, then this is not the book for you. If you are interested in candle magick in general, read this book to get a different perspective on the subject, then be sure to read other books if you wish to develop an overall and deeper understanding of candle magick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for candle burning rituals!!, May 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Candleburning Rituals: Spells and Rituals for Every Purpose (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series) (Paperback)
Buckland's book, Practical Candle Burning Rituals, is great for doing any type ritual he has mentioned. It also is two sided...given you a Christian version for non-Witches and a Pagan side for Witches/Wiccans/Pagans to use.The directions are easy to follow and if you follow the directions that he has set for timing, moon phases, and use the appropriate colors your spell should work for you.I refer back to his book many times when I am teaching my students...especially when they want to know the appropriate colors and altar layouts for candle spells. The way Buckland has written this book is what works for him..there is no law that says you can not improvise your own words into the rituals he has written to make them work for you.Excellent book...easy rituals and great results!

5.0 out of 5 stars Anyone can learn the basics of candle magick, November 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Candleburning Rituals: Spells and Rituals for Every Purpose (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series) (Paperback)
I have had success in using this book. I agree with someone else's comment that if the rituals didn't work for you, it's not the author's fault! This book is great, because you can adapt the rituals easily. Christians can also use this book, which is good. Some Wiccan books at times sound anti-Christian, but not this one. (I am Wiccan, and I know what Christians did in the past is wrong, and some still do it, but let's not create more problems by being anti-Christian). The rituals are easily adaptable, and I would highly reccommend this book. I have had much success with it.
