Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book, now in its 5th printing, has proven itself a valuable resource for jewelers, modelmakers and sculptors. Its page-at-a-glance format and convenient spiral binding have earned it high praise as a practical studio tool. --This text refers to an alternate Spiral-bound edition.

From the Author

As a teacher, I respect the talent of individual artists and their desire to spend time working rather than reading. I've tried to make this book compact, direct, and friendly. It allows a reader to find a needed bit of information quickly, to instantly assess what tools and supplies are needed, and then get to work. --This text refers to an alternate Spiral-bound edition.

More About the Author

Tim McCreight is a designer, teacher, author, and goldsmith. He received a degree in fine arts from The College of Wooster and an MFA in jewelry and silversmithing from Bowling Green State University. He taught fulltime for 25 years, first at the Worcester Center for Crafts and then at Maine College of Art. Along the way he has taught hundreds of workshops throughout the US and in Canada, Japan, Mexico, and the UK.

After writing two books for large commercial publishers, he decided to take on the challenges of illustration and layout, joining a new generation of authors who took control of all aspects of their books. In this way he has overseen all details of many of his books, most notably Complete Metalsmith, which is recognized as a standard text in the field. His books have been translated into Russian, Japanese, and Italian.

McCreight's books are characterized by a practical approach and commonsense descriptions that empower beginning artists while confirming information for advanced readers. His curiosity and the obvious pleasure he takes in sharing information makes his books not just readable but fun. Most of his books deal with metalsmithing but he has extended into design and into the genre of creative nonfiction with his very popular Syntax of Objects, re-released in a new edition in 2010. In his efforts to explore new approaches, he has also created an App for iPhone, iPod, and iPad called "Metalsmith Suite," available through the iTunes store.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for begginners in jewelrymaking, April 19, 2000

The book covers all aspects of casting. I personally enjoyed the drawings, you can follow them along with the text and start making your wax models. If you have read McCreight's book "Complete Metalsmith" you probably tought the book had too information in a page, well in this book you can actually enjoy reading it since it explains in detail the processes withouth craming too much information in just one page. It is an affortable book with excellent technical instructions about the different methods of model making and casting.

Don't let the sub title Studio Reference throw a scare in you. With its lay flat binding and clear and concise steps, you will be using it in the studio as a ready reference book. As somebody who owns and have read over 25 books on casting and foundry work. This book was a light read compared to some it doesn't get bogged down in to much tech for tech sake. If you just want to find out about what it takes to do a little casting or jump in and go all the way this is the one book for you. I own it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Casting Simplified!, May 1, 2000
McCreight has written another one of his easy-to-read books for readers and would-be practitioners of the metal smith's or jeweler's art.

The book is well written. Once again the spiral bound format makes it easy to use in the shop.

This book is reasonably priced for the amount of information it provides. McCreight can never be blamed for trying to "gouge" the public with his prices.

Interested in casting? This book is a great place to start!
