5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book for beginners. I'd whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Cisco Internetworking world. This book clearly explains the basics of LAN/WAN/Routing Technologies. Great Intro book for CCNA wanna-be :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Covers only basic knowledge
I bought this book used hoping it would be a good addition to my reference libary. It did not cover the topics I was expecting. 5.0 out of 5 stars The only book I had to use, March 28, 2001
This review is from: Practical Cisco Routers (Paperback)
Simple yet thorough.

On my desk I had:

IP Routing Primer - doesn't make good bed-time reading ;-)

Cisco Routers Black Book - very nicely written, but a bit too detailed for a quick job.

Those were given by my employer.

Practical Cisco Routers - thin and easy to read. Uses extensive examples to show you exactly how things work.

That one is a personal copy.

I only had to refer to my Practical book in order to setup the router and tell someone to set up the other end of the system.

This book will not tell you the intricacies of EIGRP or explain what the output of sh tech means, but you will be up and running in no time. I only had to read one chapter to get everything configured and integrated into my main global network.

Do yourself a favor and read it thoroughly before starting a configuration using a GUI tool. There is a lot more you need to know than you might believe otherwise.

So just how much do I like this book? I am not willing to sell it!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent introduction to cisco router book!, May 9, 2000
This review is from: Practical Cisco Routers (Paperback)
I do agree that this is the best introduction book for Cisco beginners. It gives you from all the basic things you need to know about networking concepts and then explain the features of the routers and how to configure it.

I would recommend this books to my friends. Well the price itself is affordable :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Beginners !, April 14, 2000
This review is from: Practical Cisco Routers (Paperback)
One of the best intros to Cicso Routers and Networking in general. Networking topics are NOT explained in detail, but it is sufficient to get the feet wet for beginners. The chapter on TCP/IP is very good and exhaustive though not elobrate. As far as Cisco Routers are concerned, it give a handsholding type of introduction. One of the best books that I've read. Supplement this book by Cisco TCP/IP by Chris Lewis, TCP/IP Routing by Jeff Doyle, ICRC by Laura Chappell (There are other books of the same name, ICRC, by not so good authors) and ACRC. Also Cicso, A beginners Guide by Tom and Toby is recommended.

Out of all the books I've bought to study for my CCNA, this book is the best. The writing style and presentation are enjoyable, not dry or overwhelming. The examples and screenshots are worthwhile and informative. Almost every page has a "blue box" sidebar that is worth reading, giving good information, not just trivial tidbits. One of the best things about this book is the attention given to entering router commands, especially what prompt/mode you need to be in. Almost every command example is given within the context of "at this prompt" or "in this mode". It's a stress-saver. Other books just say "do this". I would highly recommend this book for everyone who wants to learn about Cisco routers or is studying for their CCNA.

3.0 out of 5 stars Covers only basic knowledge, July 10, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Practical Cisco Routers (Paperback)
I bought this book used hoping it would be a good addition to my reference libary. It did not cover the topics I was expecting. The first half of the text covered basic LAN technology, WAN technology and protocols. The remaning chapters went over a basic configuration of a cisco router right out of the box. Going only slighty more in depth than what can be done with the set-up help dialogue when you first power up.
I am not at all saying this is not a good book, but it is aimed at someone with very little to no basic networking knowledge, and who has never seen a cisco router before. If you fit that description this will make a good read for you.
