Review
This is an excellent text! For the sports trainer or anyone interested in coaching or working with young athletes, the information provided is invaluable. The detail regarding treatment of sports-related injuries is clearly written, of practical nature and useful in a hands-on situation. Previous texts that I have read on this subject matter assume a high level of prior medical training that would make the implementation of the information almost impossible. This text would be useful for anyone dealing with young athletes, from ages 8 to the early 20's.The chapter on the relationship between legal responsibility and the treatment of sports injuries was also exemplary. Dr. Hawkins understands that coaches, trainers and others working with young athletes must understand their legal responsibilities, and develop programs to address these responsibilities in an appropriate way to make the activities safe for kids! The enjoyment of sports as a recreation is founded on the idea of safe practices and equipment, but when an injury occurs, the treatment must be as excellent as the program. Dr. Hawkins should be commended for the development of a text that emphasizes these relationships and achieves its' stated goal. (Robert E Van Vraken, Attorney at Law, Burnt Hills, New York) --
