5.0 out of 5 stars The only book you need to wire your house
We bought this hoping to get ideas for wiring our new house. With only this book we were able to wire our entire new house - from setting the power at the street - to wiring our well . Not only were we able to wire our entire house - it passed inspection on the first try with no corrections . A very valuable book for home owners and builders.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the handyman
These is a lot of information in this book but if you are trying to do your own electical, it doesn't help.

This book is great if you are studying to be an electrician. It gives you a lot of background material. But for the home project, go to HomeDepot and and get an electrians guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRACTICAL ELECTRICAL WIRING - 18th Ed., February 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Electrical Wiring: Residential, Farm, Commercial & Industrial: Based on the 2002 National Electrical Code (Paperback)
This new (18th) edition of Practical Electrical Wiring is an excellent guide to basic (and also not-so-basic)residential, farm and commercial electrical wiring. It has been completely updated from the 17th edition, and reflects the latest changes in the 2002 National Electrical Code.

The text covers an astonishing range of subjects, from the basics of volts and amperes to some very solid material on grounding, wiring methods, residential service, and conductor sizing.

This book is quite different from the typical Sunset do-it-yourself guides that one picks up at Home Depot. It will not tell you how to rewire Aunt Sophie's favorite lamp. It will tell you about residential branch circuits, overcurrent devices (fuses and circuit breakers), outlet and switch boxes, residential and nonresidential lighting, special appliance circuits, safety, wiring methods, electric motors, and a great deal more.

It has an excellent section on how to modernize old work, including how to run wiring through ceilings, walls, and from floor-to-floor. And in case you've forgotten how, it also has a clear illustration of how to tie an Underwriter's Knot (see page 355)!

This really is an excellent book, obviously written by a person who has many years of practical experience and knows what he is talking about. It would serve well as a vocational school text and as a fine general reference book for the homeowner and for journeyman electrician.

To round it out, it is well illustrated, has useful NEC ampacity and load tables in the appendices, and has a very comprehensive index.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Codes in plain English, October 17, 2005
By
Frederic Hartwell gets my highest praise for taking a complex subject and presenting it in an orderly and understandable manner. From home wiring to industrial 3 phase circuits Mr. Hartwell provides sound information without sacrificing readablity. I have supervised an instrument and electrical department for a public utility for 18 years and found that the material presented in this book filled in a lot of the holes in my own knowledge. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better or more readable text on practical electrical circuits, devices and wiring techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Step-by-Step Guide on Professional Techniques and "tricks of the trade", July 14, 2006
This book is an excellent reference for anyone who is engaged in electrical work of any kind. This edition is updated with the latest National Electrical Code.

What makes this book so good is that it is written in clear, and simple language, full of helpful examples, techniques, tables, shortcuts, illustrations, quick calculation methods, and tips, allowing the do-it-yourselfer as well as the professional practitioner, to do their job right, taking into account all the "safety must". The book covers completely all requirements for over current protection, grounding and installation applied to all commonly used wiring methods.

As it was the case with previous editions, this book is organized in three Parts. Part 1 presents the fundamentals of electrical work, terminology, basic principles, and theory behind general practice. Part 2 deals with the actual wiring of residential buildings and farms. Part 3 covers the actual wiring of nonresidential buildings, like factories, schools, stores, commercial and industrial buildings.

Absolutely a must have if you deal with electrical work.

If you need an excellent book for understanding domicile wiring and most other applications, then PEW is for you.The NEC book reads like Black's Law Dictionary ,fairly dry and abstract information. This electrical reference is the most facilitative wiring book ,i had the pleasure to read through yet.The most dependable wiring information listed around.

I bought this book while in Iraq to study before I get out of the army and try to get under an apprenticeship. This book has helped me learn a LOT about the trade of inside wireman and the basic fundamentals of electricity from fomulas to installation of panel boxes to wiring an entire house and to which lamps will give the best lighting effect in a room. I am really looking forward to learning more about the trade. So far I have read it once and am already half way thru for my second time around. I highly recommend this book however, what I have learned about electrical is only from this book so I do not have a comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Electrical Reference, March 25, 2006
Of the many reference and educational books I have read, this is one of the best. This book, the NEC Code and the Illustrated Guide To The National Electrical Code by Charles R. Miller have given me a thorough understanding of the NEC and the essential things I wanted to know before wiring a new residence. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Electricians and Aspiring Electricians, April 3, 2008

If your looking to get into the Electrician field or just need a steady reference guide, then this is the book for you. Residential, Commercial, Industrial...you name it. I've been a certified Electrician for 17 years and I still use this book as a quick reference manual to this day. Not overly complex but still gets down to the nitty gritty in details.

Definitely a must buy if you're interested in pursuing a career in this trade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, Reasoned, Practical, April 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The author does a great job of explaining his topics well. If you don't live inside a municipality that has its own electrical code and enforcement, this book will tell you everything. Again, if you live in a city or town, hire a licensed electrician.
