Book Description

October 12, 2010

Going green at home can seem like an all-or-nothing proposition. Do you sell everything (including the house) and start over, building and buying only eco-friendly, renewable goods? Or do you take the advice offered up in this smart and sensible book — and remodel instead? Green building expert Barry Katz makes a compelling argument for remodeling, as he guides readers through what can be a perplexing and daunting process. Too many decisions? No worries. Katz explains how different choices impact a home’s overall green quotient, as well as its bottom line. Emphasizing off-the-shelf materials, the book shows how homeowners of ordinary means can “green up” a remodel, resulting in less waste, more energy-efficient homes, lower maintenance costs, and more comfortable, healthful environments. This is an essential guide for anyone who has ever wanted to go green but wasn’t exactly sure where to begin.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Practical Green Remodeling" offers green remodeling guidance for those who aren't sure where to begin.--Natural Home

Katz approaches the subject of green and sustainable building by explaining that nothing is clear-cut. For instance, for the question about whether a house can be green without using green materials, the answer is both yes and no. He explains that there are shades of green and no house or building that is absolutely green. Throughout the book, his tone is more that of an informed friend than a preachy advocate. The softbound book is loaded with photographs, charts and diagrams to help explain each topic. --The Oregonian

For clients who want to green their existing homes but have no idea where to start—or what going green even entails—green building proponent Barry Katz's Practical Green Remodeling: Down-to-Earth Solutions for Everyday Homes provides an easily digestible guide and handy educational tool. Katz starts with the basics and explains industry best practices for achieving energy efficiency, conserving resources, and creating healthy living environments, emphasizing off-the-shelf materials and detailing how different choices impact a home's overall sustainability, as well as the client's bottom line. He encourages clients to establish a sustainable vision for their homes that will guide their choices and the remodeling process. --Custom Home Online

Green construction doesn't have to happen from the ground up. Builder Barry Katz advocates remodeling to make a house more environmentally sensitive in his book, "Practical Green Remodeling: Down-to-Earth Solutions for Everyday Homes." Katz emphasizes that the book isn't a how-to guide but rather a "what-to book," a compilation of possibilities designed to help readers see what they can achieve through remodeling. He offers a wealth of ideas for conserving resources or making a home healthier or more energy-efficient, from simple strategies such as caulking to large-scale projects such as major additions. --Kansas City Star

Katz won an award from the Connecticut Association of Homebuilders for the best green house, a traditional-looking colonial. But, while he's happy to build you a new home, he thinks retrofitting older houses is greener. That's because new homes typically require new infrastructure - roads, electricity, plumbing, street lights - to be brought to the home. And older materials can be recycled, if not by the project itself, then by arranging to have them to be brought to a building materials recycling project. --Reuters.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Green Remodeling, Katz January 9, 2011
By NancyH
Format:Paperback
One of the best books on this topic I have seen. Easy to read, inspirational stories and photos. I don't agree, however with some of his recommendations about heating systems. From my way of thinking, at least in the Northeast, if you build it right, you will NOT need an expensive heating system, so no matter how incredibly efficient the system may be, if it is expensive, it it not worth it. Aim for a zero-net-energy home. Take the $$ you will save from an expensive heating system, invest it into the shell of the house, and then look for an inexpensive heating system that will meet your needs - like a mini-split heat pump, a through the wall gas heater etc. Happy remodeling! You are making a great investment!

This attractive well-written book is an excellent overview of green building concepts that will be useful for homeowners and general contractors. Packed with pictures, illustrations and diagrams, it looks great on a coffee table but is also practical and useful. It is more than just a check list or "how to" guide - it provides a framework for understanding what "green" remodeling really means. If you own an older house and are looking to make it more comfortable and efficient, this book is well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars super helpful October 30, 2010
Format:Paperback
This helpful guide is user friendly thanks to clear organization of the material. It can be used as a guide for total home renovation or smaller details, like what labels to look for when considering new carpet. Big picture or small details, Katz provides expert advise to his readers without overwhelming us with too much technical info. Well worth the fair price.

This is a wonderful book, a great summary of things that you can do that make a difference, and that you can apply to your own projects. Lots of books have complicated projects that seem overwhelming, but this valuable manual really gives you ideas of things you can do right away to apply "Green" Environmental ideas to your current remodelling projects. The writer is an experienced, serious, practical proponent in the field, and his advice is very usable.
