This is one of the best books that I have seen on the description and care of the most common corals for the reef aquarium. It gives information on each coral such as Common name, Scientific name, Lighting needs, Water flow, Aggressiveness and Difficulty of care. This is not a book on "how to" setup a reef tank book but an excellent reference guide on corals...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hobbyist opinion
Essentially, a basic coral book for amature hobbyists. Puplished in 1996. Since then there a a few more comprehensive books on the subject. (even by the same author.) Kind of book where one would look at a picture of a coral, scope its basic needs in four catagories; Lighting needs, water flow, Aggresiveness, and Difficulty in care. Then, if you like the look, and it fits...

This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
This is one of the best books that I have seen on the description and care of the most common corals for the reef aquarium. It gives information on each coral such as Common name, Scientific name, Lighting needs, Water flow, Aggressiveness and Difficulty of care. This is not a book on "how to" setup a reef tank book but an excellent reference guide on corals and the proper care of these animals. Many great pictures and short but very informative descriptions make this a must have to the Reefkeeper. By the way, Eric Borneman (a.k.a. Eric Hugo) is one of the best known most knowledgable contributors on the Internet and reefkeeping Mail and Usenet Groups.

4.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide - without practises, March 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
A great book concerning the subject on how to stock your aquarium, but - more information on what and how to feed the corals, how to insure that they grow etc. would have been helpful. Use it as an encyclopedia and a stocking guide, these purposes the books fulfill brilliantly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs, but expect a bit more information, January 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
This book is like a quick reference atlas. With beautiful and clear photographs, you can identify each coral. The growing conditions are classified into several categories including light, water flow, etc, and you can find it at a glance. This is a very good book, but I want to expect more detailed information about each coral.

4.0 out of 5 stars Allmost all the information you need on coral growing, September 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
This book contains almost everything you need to know about corals growing except for things like method of feeding , what to feed , preferred alkalinity , disease diagnosis and cure . It covers the basic survival criteria - light levels , water flow preferences , degree of difficulty . The photographs aid recognition . Best I have seen so far but not quite everything you need .

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, the quickest, easiest-to-use reference guide, March 26, 2003

This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
I've found this book to be, quite simply, the best, easiest-to-use reference guide for quickly identifying and getting essential information -FAST!- about most of the corals you'll find offered for sale in your local fish shops, and rank it right up there with Scott W. Michael's book "Marine Fishes, 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species" as the other must-have buying/reference guide for the saltwater aquarist. With its beautiful pictures, "A Practical Guide to Corals..." will also be an excellent addition to any coffee table!

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and beautiful, May 15, 2005
This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
This is somewhat like a small encyclopedia of corals. I believe for the photos alone many would find the book enjoyable that are not practicing this hobby.  The photos are breath taking and helpful and does a very good job at providing information on the requirements for the coral types. Unfortunately it is lacking in more detailed information on each species.
Certainly not definitive but very helpful. If you are a marine hobbiest I do not recommended it as the only book  you should own on corals but if you are a reef aquarist it should be in your library.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fast read, good pictures, good for beginners, limited, May 21, 1999

This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
A good book for begginers. Not much on the needs of corals but rather a guide on how easy or hard they are to keep. Great pictures , easy to understand . A very fast read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hobbyist opinion, August 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Practical Guide to Corals for the Reef Aquarium (Paperback)
Then, if you like the look, and it fits your experience level, one would seek out the specimen for his tank. The exact advise the author disaproves in his more comprehensive newer book. Problem, the range for the catagories are 1-10 level of difficulty. Most entries have varying scale, like 4-9. So, what does that tell me. It tells me that there are various species to the coral and the authors dont provide detailed information n this book. It is a basic book, if your keeping a reef, you already know mushrooms, button polyps..etc, are easy to keep, and Goniopora are harder to keep. Recommend spending cash and buying Auuarium Corals by Borneman. Essentially, if your going to use this book ( one being reviewed)...you may as well ask your trusty fish store guys about the coral your pointing at. By the way Borneman authored both books, so get the updated and outstanding comprehensive "Aquarium Corals". ( Nice job on Aquarium Corals Eric, thank you.)
