Especially recommended for newcomers to the Fedora environment and to classrooms teaching Linux and Fedora,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Practical Guide to Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, A (5th Edition) (Paperback)
The sixth updated edition of A Practical Guide to Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers the latest updated coverage of Fedora 15 and RHEL 6 and covers all the basics of the major changes - yet assumes no prior Linux knowledge, starting at the beginning and working into advanced applications. Chapters provide step-by-step keys from installation to configuring Linux using a DVD in the book, and cover applications for desktops and networks alike. The DVD holds the fill version of Fedora 15. Especially recommended for newcomers to the Fedora environment and to classrooms teaching Linux and Fedora.

Sobell continues to put out excellent resources for those involved in the world of Linux. This book is practical for beginners, yet has exercises that can challenge many Linux developers. Sample code in the book is very practical too.

This book should have been one of my first books on Linux. Any case, after going through a couple of other books, I landed this one. I'm still studying it but have already like it. The book explains topics from the beginning and leads you through to more advanced topics without and lack of simplicity. Many of the topics that I had troubles with have been explained well. For instance, I had always had trouble in the past in grasping Classful and Classless Networking concepts, subnetting, routing and iptables. After this book, I feel more at ease. I also like the Exercises and Advanced Exercises at the end of each chapter. They make you think and help clear concepts. Although the book is geared for Fedora/Red Hat users, I find the contents relevant to Linux/Unix in general also.Good book for anyone who is looking for a kickstart into Linux concepts esp Fedora/Red Hat.

I purchased this book for learning fedora 14. Actually this book explained with fedora 12. Most of chapter, they explained well. However, some more example is necessary. For example, this book doesn't include any working cron job command, and doesn't include proper explaination about each field of crontab. Anyway, I satisfy this book. I mostly working with server setup including ssh, vsftpd, httpd, NFS, and CUPS. This book explained detail about these well.

Good book and command reference, comes with outdated Fedora,

The book offers plenty of useful advice and guidance. There are many commands explained in simple and clear fashion. I am a beginner and this book is little too much for me. In my local book store "final sale" price and reviews were too good to resist. There's one thing that disappoints is an outdated Fedora 12 that comes with it. And apparently the book reflects version 12. I compared this book to the library of books included with Fedora 14 Linux, 4-disks DVD Installation and Reference Set, Ed.2011 and it is on more advanced side. I'm still reading a book for beginners from the included library and later will give this book another try. This book compared to another book I've got "linux bible" is much better, offers many examples and good explanations, but having old Fedora bundled with it spoils a deal. It also makes me uncertain if this book is still good for newer Fedora 14.

I knew almost nothing about Linux. Sobell has laid the book out very logically, and proceeds to describe the Fedora Linux system in sufficient detail for one to feel comfortable mucking around with command lines and superuser status. I'm about one-fourth of the way through the book; I'm confident that, when I'm finished, I'll be able to get my Fedora system working exactly as I would like it to work.
