5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Very Helpful from one who knows
I bought this book two years ago and never forgot the section on applying to grad schools. I followed Lazzari's advice and got into six of the seven grad programs I applied to. I cannot say how important this book is to anyone wishing to further their lives as a creative person. The advice and suggestions are invaluable.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth the price
I've read many art business books - and this one is on the bottom of the pile. While it was expected that the content would not be radically different, the format was boring, the text was basic, much of the advice seemed to date from the 70's (the difficulty of buying and renovating a warehouse loft? really?!?), and overall it was just not presented in an interesting or...

5.0 out of 5 stars Been looking for a second copy..., July 26, 2002

I gave my old copy to a friend that was starting out as a sculptor. This book is a comprehensive handbook for anyone wanting to become an artist, or one that has already started. I love that it has a section that shows how to take proper photographs of your artwork to send slides for shows. It is also nice that there are parts where established artists tell a little on how they do it and give helpful advice. It is very helpful. A must for the emerging artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent suggestions and resource for all visual artists., September 4, 1997

Thinking that this book was exclusively for the painting artist I began to realize that these helpful hints could be used by any genre. Then to my surprise photography was covered. I look forward to re-reading this book then passing it on. Hope they are selling for you

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on learning to deal in the art world!, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
Lazzari, is an amazing artist, as well as writer. I used this book for a Gallery Managment course at El Camino College in Torrance, CA taught by Christian Mounger. While taking this course, we exhibited some of Lazzari's work's in our Gallery, and she gave an insightful lecture on this subject. It is excellent! I am still using it, and recommending it to others. It is well written, in sightful, and useful! A must have for all seaching a career in Art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lazzari's book is a vital tool, for serious studio artists., February 27, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist (Paperback)
It is a long road from Art School graduation to solo shows in major galleries. Lazzari's book is a vital tool to help navigate that road. The book is filled with practical information, on the business of being an artist, and opportunities in the arts.Much of the information is information you don't, normally, get in Art Schools.
Every serious artist needs help with the practical out of the studio stuff. If you do not have a dealer (you trust) or someone who manages your career and finaces, you can use this book. I have bought this book for friends and serious students in the arts.

Save your money and keep searching.
Try some of these:
I'd Rather Be in the Studio! - one of the best books out there for artists!
How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul - not bad, mostly lists and great links for searching other info.
Business And Legal Forms for Fine Artists (3rd Edition) - must have to understand some of the legalities.

This review is from: The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist (Paperback)
The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist is a general introduction to the mundane tasks of the working artist. There's nothing glamorous here. If you're serious about art, you're probably familiar with most of what's covered in the book, but it never hurts to reinforce that knowledge.

This is a handbook and not a coffee table or shelf piece, so take the price break and buy it used.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money!, February 7, 2008
This review is from: The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist (Paperback)
Why is this book so expensive??? Plus it's out of date. Not worth the $50-$60 you're expected to pay, especially if this is a required text for a college level course.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the most awesome textbook, August 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Some very stupid things are said in this textbook and I honestly can't figure out why anybody would use it for a college course. I think they should use "How to survive and Prosper as an Artist" by Caroll Michels. That is a much better book.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Review of The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist, October 16, 2008

This review is from: The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist (Paperback)
I am finding the book very helpful. Every artist should read it. It is easy to read, short sweet and to the point. This book was required reading for a class I'm taking on Exhibition Design. I wish it wasn't so expensive!
