Review

"...comprehensive rather than exhaustive, and the integration of clinical and laboratory aspects of the investigation of haemostatic disease will make this a valuable tool for both the clinician and scientist alike."
British Journal of Biomedical Science

Book Description

Provides a comprehensive yet concise and practical guide to the full range of clotting and bleeding disorders encountered in clinical practice. Presented in three sections, this book informs and advises clinicians in all stages of diagnosis, management and prevention of thrombotic and hemostatic disorders. Why Buy This Book? Essential practical management for all those working in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis A comprehensive yet concise and practical guide to the full range of clotting and bleeding disorders encountered in clinical practice. Advice to guide clinicians through the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of thrombotic and haemostatic disorders Each chapter to follow a standard template supplemented with a mini-contents list, key points, further reading and a summary box Highlights controversial issues and provides advice for everyday questions SUBJECT: Those working in the field of thrombosis and haemostasis manage patients with a variety of bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Haemophilia A and B, Von Willebrand''s disease and platelet disorders comprise the majority of the inherited bleeding disorders managed by a unit. These conditions occur as a result of specific abnormalities in the blood which may upset the delicate balance between factors which promote blood coagulation (clotting) and those which act as anti-coagulants. Recently, there has been a great deal of concern over travel related to deep vein thrombosis and therefore much more interest and research into the field of blood clotting. NEED: There is a need for a new, practical manual to guide all those working in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis. It will take the reader through the range of approaches for the diagnosis, management, or prevention of specific diseases or conditions encountered in this field. The book will be based on a similar model to Murphy: Practical Transfusion Medicine. COMPETITION: There are several large and expensive multicontributor textbooks that give extensive information about all aspects of haemostasis and thrombosis, with particular emphasis on the basic science. Our book will have a practical and didactic approach and each chapter will have a standard format so it can be read ''''cover to cover'''' by trainee/resident haematologists revising for exams or used as a reference source by clinicians when faced with specific problems. All chapters are written by international experts in the field to ensure the latest research and clinical advice is given. FORMAT: This book will be divided up into three separate sections. The first will deal with the basics of haemostasis including key principles, laboratory tests, molecular genetic tests and platelet function tests. Section two will cover the practice of clinical haemostasis and thrombosis and discuss conditions such as haemophilia, Von Willebrand''s disease, inherited coagulation defects, platelet defects, venous thromboembolism, arterial thrombosis and anticoagulation. The final section will address the interface with other clinical specialities such as obstetrics, paediatrics, intensive care, cardiology, hepatology, renal medicine, oncology and transfusion. CONTENT AND ORGANISATION: See contents list below. FEATURES: Essential practical management for all those working in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis Advice to guide clinicians through the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of thrombotic and haemostatic disorders. Each chapter to follow a standard template supplemented with a mini-contents list, key points, further reading and a summary box. Highlights controversial issues and provides advice for everyday questions. MARKETING: We have a major presence in haematology and therefore have access to all the key lists and meetings in this speciality. We also publish the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis for the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis so this will be a specific organisation to target with this book. The haemophilia community should also be reached. SUPPORT: The three editors are well-respected haematologists, with expertise in disorders of thrombosis and haemostasis. Dr O''shaughnessy is the Director of the Haematology Unit at Southampton University, Dr Makris is a Senior Lecturer in Sheffield and Dr Lillycrap is an international expert in the field of bleeding disorders and based in Canada. SUMMARY: Practical Hemostasis and Thrombosis will be a comprehensive yet concise and practical guide to the full range of clotting and bleeding disorders encountered in clinical practice.
