Book Description

February 2005
Practical Herbalism is destined to become a favorite reference for experienced herbalists and natural health newcomers alike. Drawing on nearly two decades of personal experience, observation, and research, Dr. Fritchey provides a refreshing and enlightening historical perspective, and a bounty of reassuring, down-to-earth methods for using commonly found or easily grown medicinal herbs.

Practical Herbalism will take you on a journey from its "ancient roots" to modern science beginning with the evolution of Herbal Medicine in the West. Learn how the healing salvation of God-given herbs was dragged from common knowledge to "quackery," and how the revival of interest in natural health might have saved thousands of years of herbal wisdom from eradication. Learn simplified processes for gathering, preserving, and making good medicine from everyday plants—techniques once familiar to every self-sufficient household. Learn why and what an herb does is more important than what it is. Then follow along as Dr. Fritchey takes you on an in-depth exploration of 46 very common "Ordinary Plants with Extraordinary Powers." Learn when and how you can use the herbs that can be readily found in your own neighborhood or easily grown in your own garden just as herbalists and wise-women have done for centuries. Compare notes with the ancients, and find validation in current scientific studies. Most of all, find comfort and reassurance in the healing gifts of a Loving Creator which have been placed all around us in anticipation of our every need.

Practical Herbalism is authoritative in its research, and extensive in its scope. At the same time, Dr. Fritchey simplifies and demystifies herbal medicine, and puts it back within the grasp of all who want to reclaim some control over their health options. Products can be taken away, but knowledge is irrevocable. Here is the knowledge you need to help yourself, your family, and your clients—whatever the future may bring.

About the Author

Philip L Fritchey, M.H., N.D., CNHP

Since rediscovering his family herbal heritage in the late 1980’s, and recovering from a personal health crisis of his own, Dr. Fritchey has become a vocal advocate and nationally recognized lecturer on traditional herbalism. While working for nearly a decade alongside his wife in a busy Natural Health practice in central Georgia, he secured his Naturopathic degree and Master Herbalist letters from the Trinity College of Natural Health. He has written the Herbology curriculum for the National Association of Certified Natural Health Professionals, and now spends most of his time traveling and teaching the good news of the Biblical promise of herbs "for the healing of the nations." When not on the road, he formulates and compounds botanical remedies and skin care products that are distributed nationwide. He relies heavily on garden grown and wild-crafted native plants, and celebrates Nature’s abundant apothecary.

This book is very detailed; but it is easy to understand and follow. It is especially good for the beginning herbalist or one who is well versed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I CAN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN October 12, 2012

Since I was diagnosed with a benign meningioma in May 2012, I've found a way to arrest it with a vegan diet. Now I'm searching for a way to shrink it. Standard medical practice has no way other than add poisonous drugs to my now revived health which just doesn't make sense. How can you add poison to get health?
Essiac herbal tea users claim it cures cancer. The AMA calls it a 'placebo effect' to make one think herbs are useless. At any rate, it's not poison. I wanted to find out more about these herbs. I found sheep sorrel growing in my yard. It wasn't referenced in this book, but Oh, Dear Lord, as I kept reading it was like someone turned on the lights and I could see all the gifts inder the Christmas Tree!!! The HORSETAIL and CLEAVERS that kept overtaking my flower bed. The COMFREY that won't go away. The BURDOCK burrs matted in my dog's coat. The WILD CHERRY tree that was blown over in the storm and was neatly cut, split and stacked. I bend over to walk under the WILLOW tree. The POKE weed that won't pull out of my garden. NETTLES sting my arms while picking RESPBERRIES. I twist my ankles on fallen BLACK WALNUTS. I wipe the mud off my boots on DANDELION and PLANTAIN. God was trying to hit me upside the head with a 2x4!
PRACTICAL HERBALISM has changed my life. It opened the door to new (old) remedies that have been lost to 7 generations thanks to the AMA. Included in this read are common backyard herb identification, preserving methods, what parts of the plants to use, medicinal properties, synergistic herbs, recipes for teas, tinctures, syrups, ointments and more, dosages, and what maladies they are used for.
I highly recommend this book as a good running start for a beginner herbologist and will be a permanent part of my library and my legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical! July 10, 2012

I love this book. I've started at the beginning, and have found more than I thought I'd see. It explains how the use of herbs has survived the medical establishment, which is valuable information, especially when someone scoffs at your efforts. I like the explanations with each herb, and how to prepare them for use.

This book gives detailed information in an easy to understand way! I would love to see this kind of information on many more herbs than just those he covered in his book. It would be great to see a Practical Herbalism II published!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book at any stage... October 2, 2011

This is THEE book that I turn to first when I have and herbal question. It is great and of all the books I have read on herbs, I have to say this is my favorite. It gives pictures of herbs and what they are good for and the history of it's use, but also gives ailments internally and externally in an easy format to understand. My only beef is that I wish it covered more herbs.
