5.0 out of 5 stars Coherent Treatment of Ancient Africanized Wisdom, July 30, 2001
This review is from: Practical Ifa: For the Beginner and Professional (Paperback)
Those of you undertaking the way of Ifa, the ancient wisdom of the Yoruba, should have this book to aid you on your journey. Babalawo S. Solagbade Popoola gives sixteen verses for each of the omo odu of the Book of Ogbe, Ogbe Oyeku through Ogbe Ofun. He has also provided a summary page citing orisha affiliated with the odu, ewo or taboos of the odu combination, and naming possibilities derived from the subject odu. This way of presenting the material has the advantage of being concise; giving one a feel for the meanings of each of the sixteen principle odu in combination with the Father of Odu, Ogbe. Awo Popoola is clearly devoted to the scripture of Ifa, its literary merit and spiritual depth. He rose to Ifa priesthood under the instruction of Oluwo Adeboye Oyesanya, of the Indigene Faith of Africa in Ebute Metta, Lagos, Yorubaland. Though this volume is labeled Volume 3, it is the first published of a proposed eighteen volume series. The text is in comfortably large print.

This is quality work, the author put this together and explained it very well, comparing this to the work Ifa-A Complete Divination you will see the quality difference, this is a must have for every Ifa student, the author needs to complete the collection for the other volumes, if they are available tell me where to get them or why amazon does not carry it

4.0 out of 5 stars Moderate opinion, May 13, 2011
This review is from: Practical Ifa: For the Beginner and Professional (Paperback)
I agree with your commentaries. This book is wonderful. But the books ifa a complete divination of Salami to me is far better i will explain why. It shows what REALLY is ifa poetry and what should able a babalawo to do. Ifa is poetry based on nature and cosmos wisdom. When recited, one has to be spontaneous, hearing is own internal voice and heart to recite and invoque good fortune trought the sacred story.
Ayo Salami, knows that the education of an awo must be well done. One cannot answer too quickly to the demand of the student. The student must show suuru (patience) and respect to his elders, and they will make him a good Babalawo. If you give too much information without being assured that the student had passed trouht traditionnel formation and he had graduated, there is a risk for rebellion. You are giving a gun to a child.
Books are essential nowadays, BUT ORAL SCIENCE IS ABSOLUTE IN THE SPIRIT REALM, and a babalawo cannot use book to recite odù. He must know them perfecly and be able to recite them anytime.
This is the humble opinion of Amosun Leka.
