Book Description

December 31, 1999
"Practical Jack's CheckList for Y2K" is a contingency planning tool, divided into two sections: 1) a very detailed and comprehensive CHECKLIST of action items and purchase items; and 2) robust collection of suggestions (CONSIDERATIONS) about planning, buying, storing, conservation, and safety. It is an "electronic book", which means you run it on your computer. The CONSIDERATIONS section is in HTML, easily navigable by any standard browser. The CHECKLIST section is in generic spreadsheet format, useful in popular spreadsheet programs, easily modifiable to fit your particular circumstances. The electronic format puts you much closer to full Y2K preparedness than merely reading a paper book and then having to build from scratch lists of things to do and buy.

The author's style is practical and succinct. The content is targeted toward the millions of families who DON'T plan to move to a remote location, arm themselves, plant huge gardens, and raise livestock; but who DO plan to make practical preparations for a one-month to one-year series of economic disruptions.

The book is NOT a marketing tool for a line of "survival products".

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Practical Jack's CheckList for Y2K" guides you through judgments about what you and your family need to buy and do to prepare for Y2K. It also contains a very detailed and comprehensive checklist of action items and purchase items. You can use this checklist as a tool to assist in the planning, storing, conserving, and tracking processes. The book offers about 100 pages of things to consider, and another 100 pages of a detailed checklist. It is an "all-digital" book, which means you run it on your computer. The considerations are in HTML, legible by any standard browser. The CheckList section is in generic spreadsheet format, useful in popular spreadsheet programs. Because it is in spreadsheet format already, you can modify it easily to fit your particular circumstances. It puts you much closer to preparedness than reading a paper book and then having to build from scratch lists of things to do and buy. -- Publisher

From the Publisher

Our first "electronic book", a unique and powerful approach to preparedness. The real power is in the spreadsheet which starts you out much farther ahead in Y2K preparations than conventional paper books. But additionally, there is a large collection of suggestions that is very easy to navigate because it's in HTML. A robust sample is at our website.

The CD-ROM version supports Windows 3.1 and Windows 95/98/NT. Browsers tested are Netscape 3 and 4, Internet Explorer 3 and 4, AOL 4, and Opera 3.5. Spreadsheets tested are Excel 7, MS Works 3, Quatro Pro 7, and Lotus 1-2-3 v5. (A Macintosh version is available for download at our website)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical guide for preparing for Y2K., May 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Jack's CheckList for Y2K (CD-ROM)
This is an excellent guide for preparing for Y2K, from an individual family perspective. Miller doesn't waste time explaining how the bug happened, or what corporations are doing to correct the problem. He focuses on what you and I need to do to get ready for the very likely reality that many things will go a bit haywire on January 1, 2000. His best piece of advice is to start getting ready NOW. Don't wait until December. By then if you aren't ready, you'll just have to sit tight and hope for the best. Also, things will probably start to get a bit crazy in November and December as other people realize they are late getting started.

Miller's advice is very practical and down to earth, explaining the basic, simple things we can all do to prepare. He doesn't preach about doomsday or Armageddon. He assumes that society won't collapse around us, just that things could get a bit tough. His spreadsheet checklist makes it incredibly easy (using your computer, ironically) to go through and choose what you may need to store and be ready for. He makes many suggestions beyond just storing water, providing useful insight into what it takes to survive a little while without the day to day things we take for granted now.

I highly recommend this electronic book. The price is right, and it could save you a lot of grief the first month of 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for Y2K, June 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Jack's CheckList for Y2K (CD-ROM)
I have read a number of good (and not so good) books on Y2K. The kind of book that has been most useful for me is those that help me plan a course of action to minimize the impact of personal disruptions expected because of Y2K. What sets "Practical Jack's Checklist for Y2K" apart for me are: (1) As an electronic book (formatted in HTML) it takes full advantage of hyperlink functionality. This not only makes the Table of Contents and Index a joy to use but also leads me to associated topics from within the chapters. (2) The checklist (in Excel format) follows the organization of the electronic book. This has been extremely helpful as a starting point for me to organize and track my preparation efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific planning tool for Y2K., May 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Jack's CheckList for Y2K (CD-ROM)
Miller covers the full range of planning tips, from trash to family fun. His style is light and conversational; but make no mistake, this is a serious book. The real genius is the spreadsheet checklist - you enter the items you use on an everyday basis, and the checklist automatically computes how many you have to buy and store - and at what cost - for Y2K. This makes planning a lot more efficient; there's no guesswork here.
