Excellent metalsmithing, gemstone working repair guide, January 7, 2008
This review is from: Practical Jewellery Repair (Hardcover)
Update --
This book focuses a lot on blowtorch techniques, ring making and jewelery making history. It's very entertaining to read as well as having mostly just tips on how to do things in the best or easiest way. It's not a step by step book, but would be best paired with a step by step oriented metal-and-gems jewelery making book.
I enjoyed blacksmithing very much during my "going to camp" years, and metal jewelry making is, to me, like a miniature version of it. It's a hobby that anyone can do in their basement (with appropriate ventilation). Keep young kids closely supervised, though. It's easy to cut yourself or burn yourself badly, not to mention touching unhealthy metals for hours. When I was a kid, part of the fun of it was that it was dangerous. It gave me a sense of caution and responsibility.
Original Review --
I'll update this once I receive "Practical Jewlery Repair", but wanted to point out that professional jewlery websites have this item selling for well over $40, so the savings is actually higher than noted on this web page - it's currently list price $35. It covers the techniques of soldering, casting, wire-drawing, polishing, sawing and filing, among others. Note that it's not designed for the string-and-beads jewlery maker, unless s/he is also interested in metal/gem jewlery making or is looking for techniques that can be carried over.
