Book Description

March 1989
This encyclopaedic volume synthesises 25 years of research and development of this unique rig as adapted to western craft. It is a work which has been welcomed by the growing number of yachtsmen and designers throughout the world who already enjoy the benefits of junk rig or who wish to do so. Now in paperback for the first time, Practical Junk Rig examines the design and aerodynamic theory behind junk rigs and discusses how best to sail them. It outlines the rig in detail, the principles that underlie it, considers possible alternative shapes and arrangements and analyses performance, all assisted by a wealth of detailed line illustrations. 'There is no better or more compehensive work on the subject available...it should be considered THE handbook on junk rigs for anyone interested in the subject' Sailing 'I cannot recommend this book too highly' Classic Boat

About the Author

'Blondie' Hasler was awarded the OBE for his services in Norway in 1940. He invented the modern yacht wind vane self-steering gear; founded the Single-handed Transatlantic Race in 1960 (in which he finished second in his junk-rigged Jester), and the Round Britain Race and did a great deal of developmental work on the Chinese junk rig for yachts. He died in 1987. Major Jock McLeod joined Hasler as a partner in 1963. He currently sails Ron Glas, his 47-foot junk rigged schooner and has made six Atlantic crossings in her, two of them in single-handed races. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handling/Building the Junk Rig, June 17, 2000
The theory and relevant illustrations along with specific commentary make this a unique and mandatory Must Read for anyone considering serious sailing conditions in a junk rig sailboat. If you are going to design your own rig, you've still hit the jackpot. This book will save you about a hundred years of costly mistakes, serious wallet aches, and may even save your life. The Junk rig is fantastic , but like any rig you need knowledge to use it correctly and safely. By the way, I'll take the Junk Rig over anything out there today, it is forgiving, inexpensive, more durable than dirt, and usable in heavy weather as well as sunset cruises on a smooth day. With so little pressure on any point of the sail, they just don't rip. You could shoot holes in it with a shotgun and you wouldn't affect performance much. Try that with a western rig, and the pressure would rip it apart. I can't give this book anything but 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The First Book to Read., April 28, 2008

Ahoy!

If someone is interested in junk rigged boats; this is the first book to purchase and read. It established the subject and lexicon.

For years, I have owned and lived aboard the last NA29 to come out of the mold, It is a shame that this particular design is not included in the book. Also, I believe the book was written before the research on cambered sails on Junks was in, and it only discusses "flat cut" (no camber) sails. For that information, one pretty well has to go to the Junk Rig Assn. or Yahoo Junkrig Group.

Fair winds...
