Book Description

October 2001
Created for chief technology officers (CTOs), chief information officers (CIOs), consultants, and practitioners, including administrators of various types who are interested in developing knowledge management solutions within a corporation, Practical Knowledge Management: The Lotus Knowledge Discovery System describes the new knowledge discovery software from Lotus Development Corporation. Knowledge management is a method for obtaining tangible value out of the substantial technology investments business leaders have made. As employees use electronic communications tools to transact business, they create huge repositories of important information about people, products, processes, and procedures. This previously untapped corporate information, or intellectual capital, can be reused to improve organizational efficiency. The Lotus Knowledge Discovery System uncovers relationships between people and groups of documents based on actual user actions, such as authorship and how frequently they access certain types of content. Using leading-edge technologies, the Lotus product computes document value, uses statistical analysis to organize similar documents into groups, and creates a searchable index. It then systematically catalogs corporate expertise and information resources; personalizes and organizes knowledge for individuals and communities; and provides a place for teams to work, make decisions, and take action. During the development of the product, the Lotus Knowledge Discovery System team worked with internal and external teams and used the product to organize and catalog its own project information. This book is an outgrowth of that experience, and it includes their experiences.

About the Author

Wendi Pohs has been in textual information delivery in the software industry for almost 20 years. After receiving her Master's Degree in library and information science from the University of Michigan, she began her career at the American Mathematical Society writing COBOL programs to support a new system for displaying mathematical formulas online. Her interest in finding information in text led her to the early text retrieval systems, such as Stanford's SPIRES and Battelle's BASIS, and this, in turn, led her to Digital Equipment Corporation and the development of a competitive intelligence retrieval system, successfully used for years by the Digital sales force.

Wendi joined Lotus Development Corporation just as the Web was taking off. While Lotus pioneered the concept of topic-specific databases or collaborative computing in the workplace, increasingly easy access to mail systems and newsgroups fostered a sense of online community on the Internet. The resulting proliferation of unstructured information emphasized the need for both software tools and a professional background geared towards meaningful organization of text. Wendi was asked to join the Knowledge Discovery System development team as resident "cybrarian."

Seth Earley is president of Earley & Associates, a Boston, Massachusetts, consulting firm specializing in strategic planning, research, and development of Web systems for document management, content management, and knowledge management. He is adjunct professor at Northeastern University's graduate school, teaching knowledge management infrastructure, and founder of the Boston KM Forum, a community of practice for knowledge management professionals. His firm's framework for KM consists of a “holistic’ approach: integrating various technology classes, addressing cultural issues, and creating systems for measuring the bottom line impact of KM projects.

Gayle Thiel joined Lotus Development Corporation as an editor in 1996. Currently a principal technical writer, she documents Lotus Domino's full-text search capability across repositories (Domain Search). Her work prior to Lotus includes over 10 years in technical editing and publications management at Litton-Itek Optical Systems, in support of the development of airborne optical surveillance systems.

Marianne White is a principal technical editor at Lotus Development Corporation where she edits and indexes documentation for Domino and other Lotus products, formulates indexing policy, and conducts indexing classes. Prior to joining Lotus in 1998, Marianne was a writer and editor at Aspen Technology and Digital Equipment Corporation, where she collaborated with Wendi on the development of a corporate thesaurus and online classification of marketing and sales information. Marianne received her MLS from Simmons College.
