4.0 out of 5 stars You think what you're feeling is some spell?
You'll be quick to find that this soundtrack is one of those rare cases where the music really does give you a sense of the movie. The music was obviously carefully picked to fit into all scenes chosen for it, and when you listen to the album, you will feel the need to pop in the movie as well. 4.0 out of 5 stars You think what you're feeling is some spell?, December 5, 1999

You'll be quick to find that this soundtrack is one of those rare cases where the music really does give you a sense of the movie. The music was obviously carefully picked to fit into all scenes chosen for it, and when you listen to the album, you will feel the need to pop in the movie as well. Every song (with the exception of perhaps two) has the never lilting but always haunting quality that keeps you inline with the feel of the film. This holds true from the beginning with Stevie Nicks performing "If you ever did believe" with Sheryl Crow, through contemporaries like Lisa Hall ("Is this real?") and Michelle Lewis ("Nowhere and everywhere") to classics like the strirring "A case of you" by Joni Mitchell and right back again to Stevie with "Crystal." Even the king of rock'n'roll gets revisited with "Always on my mind." it is surprising that the two uptempo numbers by Faith Hill ("This Kiss") and Marvin Gaye ("Got to give it up (Part 1)") aren't jarring after you've settled into the rest of the album but this is never the case. You'll find that it feels as if a spell may have been cast over you when you suddenly feel the need to watch the movie because you've listened to the music, or you "have just got to get that soundtrack because the movie had such great songs!" But then who knows....maybe it is a spell. They only have power when you believe in them, and this one......I believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Case of You, July 7, 2001
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I love this soundtrack. Every song is wonderful and spellbinds you! This soundtrack is enchanting. Stevie Nicks is at her best with "If You Ever Did Believe" and "Crystal." Other excellent songs are Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You", Michelle Lewis' "Nowhere and Everywhere" and Nick Drake's "Black Eyed Dog". Also, I must mention Faith Hill's "This Kiss"!!!! This an enchanting cd ... just like the movie! I have often listened to this soundtrack 6 hours or more at a time! It is THAT good! Buy it today... you will enjoy the variety of music on this cd and the quality and talent of the artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a Thought!, October 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
Well, after reading ALL the reviews, no one really liked BlackEyedDog, though the song invokes sadness in me at Michael's death in the movie, and everyone liked "This Kiss". I say "Go buy "The Runaway Bride" soundtrack (really great, but less deep), because this soundtrack was purely for the spiritual romantic". The Joni Mitchell song, the best on the CD, besides the Goddess Stevie's work, proves as much a summary of Gillian's relationships as a masterpiece. The other songs on the CD, be it the Elvis song or lisahall's "Is this real?" were all very good, fit perfectly with the whole disc, and were commendable. I too LOVE BranVan3000, and Michelle Lewis. Great CD, perfect for the "little witch in every woman"!

4.0 out of 5 stars ~*If You Ever Did Believe*~, February 8, 2005
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I've never seen the movie, but bought the soundtrack specifically for the two Stevie Nicks tracks "If You Ever Did Believe" & "Crystal"-which aren't available elsewhere. "If You Ever Did Believe" has become one of my favorite Stevie Nicks songs. Sheryl Crow sounds great on the back-up vocals. "Crystal" is actually an old song from the pre-Fleetwood Mac "Buckingham/Nicks" album. Lindsey Buckingham originally sang "Crystal", but Stevie's version here is just as wonderful. The rest of the soundtrack is good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a no brainer......GET IT!, April 19, 1999
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
There's a song for everyone on this soundtrack. If you espeacialy like Stevie Nicks you'll love it. It's got folk: Joni Mitchell, Country Western: Faith Hill's #1 hit and some New Wave with Michelle Lewis and Bran Van 3000. Throw in some soul with Marvin Gaye and Elvis Presley, and round it off with a beautiful insrtumental piece from The Michael Nyman Orchestra! This CD leaves you going back for more! Get out your broomsticks ladies, light a candle, and just sit back and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hesitating stops now!, August 23, 2003
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
If you are hesitating between buying this album and letting it be, stop hesitating now and click that buy button! This is one of the best CD's that you could ever get, I listen to this whenever I want something relaxing, something inspiring, something to get me thinking, something to be me dancing. Heck, I just listen to this /all the time!/

It's not often when you come across a CD where you honestly like every song on the entire track. But I can say right here and right now that each of these songs is competing for the top of my favorites list. They are all amazing in each of their own ways.

These songs aren't overplayed now, and no matter how many times you play them over, they never sound overplayed. You'll love this album, I promise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best soundtrack I've bought!, March 27, 2000

I love listening to soundtracks and have bought some dud's but this one is the best I've ever bought. If you loved the film you will love the soundtrack. It is the only soundtrack I have where I like all the songs! There are quite a few non-famous artists but also some old favourites like Elvis Presley, Harry Nilsson and Joni Mitchell. The CD also has 2 of the classical themes from the film which makes the CD a nice mix. I hardly take it out of my CD player!

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Nyman's music made it worth it, too bad., March 27, 1999
By
James Luckard (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I wanted to see the movie just because I saw that Michael Nyman was scoring it. Then, a few weeks before the release I read of the Alan Silvestri replacement score. Luckily, the first batch of Cds shipped out already had Nyman's music on them.

I had heard his music in "Gattaca" and loved it. The two tracks he did for "Practical Magic" are powerful, playful, brilliant. I can see why they were removed from this utterly average movie. Like his score to the new "Ravenous," it must have overpowered the film.

I got the CD for the two Nyman tracks alone, and it was worth it. I listened to the songs just once. I don't mean to criticize them, they're just not my thing.

Unfortunately, the revised Cd has two tracks of Silvestri's music. If you're a film score fan, look for the version with the Nyman tracks, they're the best film music of last year, only they never made it into a film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Mix, October 27, 2000
By
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This soundtrack was the reason that I am now addicted to soundtracks. There is music from a wide vareity of different artists from Fleetwood Mac to Elvis but it is so well put together, it sounds like a mix I would have made for one of my friends. I'm not partial to country music so I always have to skip track two and start on three. I listen to this cd all the time and it was one of four that I didn't pack when I moved. I recommend this to everyone, whether or not you liked (or even saw)the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Call Me In the Morning, February 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Practical Magic: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
With some great recent soundtracks from "Ladder 49," "The Aviator" & "Wicker Park," I thought it would be great to revisit this classic soundtrack from 1998. "Practical Magic" holds up well 7 years after its release as a song collection. My favorite is Nilsson's "Coconut." It's interesting that the producers use his first name since he always went by just his last name on his own releases. However, that track with "put the lime in the coconut & drink it all up, call me in the morning & I'll tell you what to do" is just the classic feel good track. Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" from her classic "Blue" album sounds at home in this set, "I'm a lonely painter; I live in a box of paints; I'm frightened by the devil & I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid. I remember that time you told me love is touching souls, surely you touched mine." Joni marries such a unique melody with poetic lyrics that any set rises from her inclusion. Stevie Nicks' two songs are both great inclusions from this enigmatic singer. "Crystal" builds nicely with her soothing vocals, "I turned around & the water was closing all around like a glove, like the love I finally found me." The opener "If Ever You Did Believe" has a lovely melody that draws you in with repeated listenings. Faith Hill's "This Kiss" had to be about the catchiest country song of the 90s & is classic in any setting. Marvin Gaye's track "Got to Give It Up (Pt. 1)" has an infectious driving beat superimposed over party sounds. Lisa Hall is not an artist I know, but this track has good energy and drive. Nick Drake was one of my favorites when he was alive. His moody folk driven melodies touched a chord as does this track "Black Eyed Dog." "Practical Magic" is an excellent collection of music. Enjoy!
