5.0 out of 5 stars best advice i've had in along time
having already read this book , I found it was filled with wisdom from the introduction to the very end , being on the water a lot for a living myself this book pointed out some of the more obvious rules of thumb that apply too mariners. And some very good ones i'd never heard of , but as it states in the book " good advice is so very hard to come by when it...

This book has some definitions but, for the experienced boater, its a waste of shelf space. The "rules of thumb" are too brief to have any real value.

This review is from: The Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge: 420 Sea-Tested Rules of Thumb for Almost Every Boating Situation (Paperback)
having already read this book , I found it was filled with wisdom from the introduction to the very end , being on the water a lot for a living myself this book pointed out some of the more obvious rules of thumb that apply too mariners. And some very good ones i'd never heard of , but as it states in the book " good advice is so very hard to come by when it comes to rules of the ocean , and the black box theory is some thing i will do my utmost to adhere to as it is all very true done with the witty sence of humor that would appeal to more than most fisherman allthe way to seasoned sailors its a very handy book , A must for all serious Boaties !

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the novice, January 11, 2007
This review is from: The Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge: 420 Sea-Tested Rules of Thumb for Almost Every Boating Situation (Paperback)
We enjoyed reading this book, but it wasn't what we had hoped. It is a better learning tool for the novice. The entries to the book are written in a alphabetical format. For example, entries about 'sails' are under S. We hoped it would be more of a non-fiction story form where one sailer's knowledge can help other sailers undergo new adventures. You'll read it once and then leave it on the shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bluewater sailor, April 12, 2007
This review is from: The Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge: 420 Sea-Tested Rules of Thumb for Almost Every Boating Situation (Paperback)
Great book. Interesting and very funy. When you sail for a while you notice that things like the "black Box" described in the book are true. Very good advises...good companion if you planning bluewater sailing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Entertaining, July 23, 2011

This review is from: The Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge: 420 Sea-Tested Rules of Thumb for Almost Every Boating Situation (Paperback)
This is a great read whether you're very experienced or a beginner.
Loaded with great tips, useful info, safety hints and seamanship lore.
I've purchased many for my friends who are into boating and they always get back to me with compliments and tidbits from Vigor's bible. He's got a wonderful warm enigmatic sense of humor. At many places I laughed out loud.
He's the real deal in a area where everyone is an 'expert'.
John Vigor is a man of great charm and wit and I'd love to meet the bloke one day.
Purchase this one and you'll be more than glad you did.

Scary what you don't know after forty years of boating and seamanship. Wish the book was available for Kindle/iPhone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need to Know, July 4, 2008
This review is from: The Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge: 420 Sea-Tested Rules of Thumb for Almost Every Boating Situation (Paperback)
This is a well written book with short,to the point bits of information. Think of it as a "Swiss Army" type of book, chock full of the informative 'bits' of info that distinguish a mariner form the landllubber. It's a quick study and easy to read and a great source to keep on hand. The short summerized "Rules" with the "whys" are easy to learn and remember. They'll pop into your head when you need them. I'd like to give this to all of my clients. (I'm a yacht broker)to keep them smarter and safer. This book should be on every boatowners vessel next to the "Rules".

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference for new/novice boater, January 3, 2008
This review is from: The Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge: 420 Sea-Tested Rules of Thumb for Almost Every Boating Situation (Paperback)
I am fairly new to boating and found this dictionary style book to be a good reference. All terms provide a true definition as well as some useful history. Worth the read.

This is a great book for new sailors and old.... Keep it by the head and you will enrich you sailing and "sitting" experience (or "s_itting " experience, ha, ha)...Full of great items from the highly technical to the ethereal--all concerning our common lust for the sea! Great gift for the sailor who has nothing or everything! It has a wealth of usefull information.
