Book Description

*2015 (5TH EDITION)*

This 5th edition is packed with even more tips for saving time, money + hassle in Paris and includes the itinerary for a one day whirlwind Paris side trip from London (yes, it can be done if you follow the strategic plan!).

This guide was compiled by a Paris tour company operator, and is the result of touring English-speaking visitors around the City of Light since 2004. The book answers important questions such as:

-What is the best way to get to/from the airport?
-What is the best arrondissement to stay in?
-How to pick a good hotel?
-How best to rent a furnished apartment instead of a hotel?
-What to bring to Paris?
-Is it safe to take the metro and what are other safety measures for travelers?

The guide also answers questions you may not have even known to ask as the sub-title suggests: "Everything You Need to Know About Paris But Didn't Know To Ask." Practical Paris is short and sweet, and goes into the nitty-gritty, ‘what do I need to know in order to book my Paris holiday’ focus that most travelers are looking for.

Save time, hassle and needless expense and make the most of your precious stay in Paris -- the research is done for you and presented in one handy guide that can be read in a just a couple of hours!

**BONUS** Included exclusively for our wonderful readers is a Useful Links webpage that is conveniently sorted in alphabetical order for easy, quick reference. You will want to bookmark this page and refer to it often. Pages open to English sites wherever possible.

*****MORE USA MAGAZINE From "Reinvent Yourself Abroad" article, February 2011 print magazine edition

... "Then she leveraged the business by writing a guidebook, Practical Paris, and created shopping guides in app format. An explorer by nature, she still travels extensively, but the City of Light is her beacon: "Whenever I leave Paris, I feel this strong pang in my heart."

The Practical Paris guide is a must-read for our Women’s Travel Connection members before we head off to Paris for our annual trip. Reading the guide is like having ‘Karen the tour guide’ right alongside. Her insider knowledge is invaluable to us.

Submitted by ACanadianGuy, Ontario: Insider tip – if you are looking for an excellent guidebook on Paris, I can recommend Practical Paris by Karen Henrich of Nuit Blanche Tours. She’s a Canadian who has lived in Paris for several years and points out valuable insights usually not seen in other guidebooks.

Article Excerpt titled "Paris, France" (P. 36) by Marybeth Bond

…she introduced us to a great street "marche" in a residential section of southern Paris. The market is near the Convention Metro stop and operates in the street on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9 AM to around 1 PM. Look for the stalls lining the streets selling food, flowers, clothes, shoes, bags and all sorts of things at very low prices.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote "Practical Paris, Everything You Need to Know About Paris But Didn't Know To Ask" out of necessity. While operating my tour company, I found myself spending hours replying to email questions from tour visitors coming to Paris. The same questions were asked repeatedly, such as: "What's the best way to get from the airport? Should we take a hotel or rent an apartment and do you have any suggestions? What is the best area to stay in? What clothes should we bring?" And the list goes on! So I decided to answer these questions thoroughly by compiling the information into one handy guide that could be used as a reference. I also added a Useful Links webpage, with links to helpful resources compiled from numerous resources that are sorted alphabetically and that open to English versions of French sites wherever possible.

The most enjoyable part for me is that I wrote most of this guide in my favourite Parisian writing cafés sprinkled throughout the city. I know some writers would be too distracted in busy environments like this, however, I seem to thrive on it and find that creativity and the words just flow. Thanks for reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource August 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fantastic resource for anyone planning a trip to Paris. I have lived in France, visited Paris numerous times and learned things that I didn't know about this wonderful city by reading Karen's book. It is very thorough, covers everything that any traveler absolutely needs to know about the city - how to get around on, where to eat, info about attractions that most tourists never hear about, how to save money and avoid paying outrageous fees, in short, all the things that I wish I had known while visiting Paris!
The ebook version is perfect as a take-along resource that you can consult at any moment during your travels. Sit at a lovely café, sipping your kir royal or café au lait, while you decide where to go next. This book makes any trip to Paris more enjoyable, relaxing and fun. Bon voyage!

2.0 out of 5 stars Short and maybe not too accurate? June 3, 2012
By Ncoop
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just read this in an afternoon (it's pretty short) and after having read dozens of travel guides in preparation for my trip to Paris, I have to say I was surprised at how many suggestions were made that contradict other guide books and info found on sites such as trip advisor. For example, they recommend the Paris Pass, with no explanation regarding the fact that this is actually a metro pass and the museum pass sold by a business under the name "Paris Pass" I've read (on trip advisor) that a lot of people who purchased this pass felt they were misled as to what is it, and this book did not explain what it was but perpetuated the myth that is some sort of unique "pass." It's not. Since I've not yet made my trip to Paris, I don't know if the other recommendations are accurate or not, but I do know that they are not in agreement with other the advice that is available regarding Paris and I've read a lot. I'd be cautious about completely trusting the advice in this book. I have enjoyed Rick Steve's Paris as well as Sixty Million French Men can't be Wrong (not really a guide book but gives good insight into the French culture). This book also pushes the author's other book on shopping in Paris - a lot! So if you want to buy a book that tries to sell you another book, this is it. But I'll be avoiding this author in the future.

"I was so thrilled to discover this book because even though we've been to Paris many times, we still seem to stumble around and usually end up discovering important things after we return home! There are so many great tips and resources in this book and it's all in one convenient place, thank you!!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Paris in my pocket! July 29, 2012
By JayBee
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have had this book on my shopping list forever -- just waiting for a new Kindle Fire to order it. I now have your Practical Paris book on my new Kindle which will NOT leave my side the entire time I am in Paris. Kudos - this little guide will be invaluable - thank you for writing it and for providing so much additional information.

Now that Paris is WiFi everywhere, the links to museums, restaurants, routes, the metro, things to see are invaluable! Now that I have rediscovered Karen's website -- [...]will also take a closer look at that and probably find more things I want to do.

Thanx so much, Karen. I have been following you for years.

4.0 out of 5 stars a trip through Paris. . . October 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm enjoying this book because it gives me a sense of the history of Paris through the book's many characters through many eras. Love the story of Louis the XIV, the Reign of Terror, the building of the Eiffel Tower, the evolutions of many Paris neighborhoods, details of the French resistance during WWII, etc. -- and so much more.

A good book to leaf through before leaving home even if you have been to Paris a number of times. Provides up to date practical information that may fill in some gaps in your knowledge. Links to other sites are very helpful in guiding you to information needed while you travelling. Buy the digital edition and take it with you. Helpful since we rented an apartment.
