Charles Meck is a familiar name to many tiers and fishermen. Author of over a dozen books and numerous magazine articles, he has come to be regarded as one of the grand old men of Pennsylvania fly fishing. Eric Stroup is the founder of the Spruce Creek Fly Company and a fly tier, writer and fly fishing guide. These two men, nearly a generation apart in age, bring an interestingly varied perspective to their tying and their fishing, and have put together a couple of engaging programs. Volume I begins with the two on the river fishing a hatch of sulphurs; with a fish or two risen, we cut to the tying bench and are given a demonstration of tying a couple of both men's favorite imitations. Not only imitations of sulphur and cornuta mayflies are discussed, but also the use of large (and not necessarily imitative) dry flies to be used as indicators when fishing small or subsurface patterns, including Charlie's famous Patriot pattern. Volume II closely follows the same format, except that the hatch in question is that of the infamous Trico. Charlie and Eric go on to describe and tie other imitations including caddis, midges and beetles. Each of the patterns is presented in its own short segment, prefaced by a menu of the materials required. The tying demonstrations are detailed and interspersed with comments on how the fly may be most effectively fished and, while obviously effective, the files are all fairly simple and should be well within the capabilities of any tier. I would give both of these videos high marks for clarity, close attention to detail and thoughtful organization. --Review: Flyfishing & Tying Journal
Charles Meck, the legendary Keystone State angler, and Eric Stroup, owner of Spruce Creek Fly Company, have teamed to create a terrific set of DVDs titled Practical Fly Patterns That Catch Trout. These two DVDs are packed with 18 patterns and several on-stream fishing demonstrations. Meck and Stroup tested all the flies on the well-educated trout of Central Pennsylvania s famous limestone rivers and spring creeks. Many of Stroup s patterns fall into the guide fly category: simple, inexpensive, and effective. Meck's flies lean more toward innovative, creative, and in some cases, famous. Charlie even shows you how to tie his most well-known pattern, the Patriot. --Fly Tyer Magazine
Fly-fishing author Charlie Meck, and Spruce Creek Fly Company founder Eric Stroup team up to show how to tie some of their favorite flies. This two-volume set includes close-up instructions on how to tie patterns to match Sulphurs, Tricos, beetles, and caddis, as well as Meck's famous Patriot pattern. Between tying segments, Stroup and Meck hit the water and show the most effective way to fish the patterns they've created. --Fly Fisherman magazine
