The list author says: "I was absolutely dying to shop for baby items the day I found out I was pregnant- like most 1st time mommies probably do- I figured I'd get the "must haves" later on at baby shower(s)/holidays so I ran right out & bought fun things like clothes, books, toys...looking back now I have a much better idea of things I SHOULD have bought instead of what I DID. I had 2 wonderful baby showers & am grateful for all the wonderful gifts I received; however, many of the items I bought were duplicated (times 5 or 6! even). What I learned is, friends & family want to buy the "fun stuff", too- despite all the more "must haves" that are on your registry...so after the showers were over, we were still left with the bulk of the "necessity" shopping, last minute (or even after baby arrived when I wasn't so up for shopping!) -not to mention, on our own dime...A lot of things, I didn't even know to buy until after baby arrived. I hope this list will help other expectant mothers- especially 1st timers- who just can't wait to shop, choose more practical ways to spend their money & still fulfill their desire to baby shop ASAP... Also- just about everything on here can be bought regardless of whether you know the gender so it doesn't matter how early on you're shopping!"
"I had 2 baby showers...but didn't receive a single bottle (they were on both my registries). Whatever kind you think you plan to use, they can be bought at any time in your pregnancy & gender is obviously irrelevant"
"Some people say these are a waste of money, but if you want one, it's something you can go buy at any time. I didn't need it right away, but it was nice when the weather got cold & it's good for the refill packs of wipes."
"a friend suggested that every time I had the urge to buy something for the baby, to buy a pack of diapers (all different sizes), I did follow this advice and it was a long time before we had to purchase diapers once our child arrived."
"We use disposable diapers, but these have tons of uses- particularly, as burp clothes & to lay on the changing table to avoid constantly changing/washing your changing table pad cover. Around 2mths, we really started using these & now they're all over our house"
"I work full time & breastfeed/pump so I always need these. My "favorite" are actually the Gerber NUK ones, but most moms I know use these Lansinoh ones, doesn't really make much difference. If you plan to breastfeed/return to work, you're going to need these!"
"I've been to my share of baby showers & never seen anyone get a crib mattress- safe bet to go ahead & get your own, so you have it as soon as your crib is assembled (bcus you'll want to set things up!)"
"This is about the only thing you can "give" for baby if they pick-up a cold, get congested, have a stuffy or dry nose- we had it on hand prior to baby's arrival & was thankful it was there when we needed it."
