An excellent book for children with AS (and all children),

When I bought this book for my child, he immediately read it. He now tells us the rules for all the situations he learned in the Practical Solutions book. It is wonderful and a true gift to children! When I had the chance to read the book (after my child went to bed), I found how truly wonderful it was! Thanks for helping my child learn things I never thought to teach. This is a true survival guide!

Haley Myles explains in a easy to understand manner what a child can do when they get into those 'what should I do' moments. Topics are covered that every child needs to know and gives advice in a straightforward child friendly way. Nine-year-old Haley Myles writes with a special sensitivity, understanding the difficulties that children with Asperger Syndrome face. This book is an excellent resource for children with Asperger Syndrome.

Great resource to deal with life's events for those with AS!,

I work with children with Asperger Syndrome and have highly recommended this book to my families that are in need of solutions to daily issues. It an easy-to-read format written by a young girl who has thought to answer questions that I would have never even thought to ask. Lot of details...if you have a child with AS...you know that he or she is probably into those details. :) Perfectly written for a child or teen's audience, this book covers topics such as how to locate family if you get lost from them in a store, manners, conversations, and much more!

The day this book arrived in the mail, I hardly got a chance to take a good look at it before my then 10 year old son (with Asperger Syndrome) nabbed it and read it from cover to cover. The reason? He said, "Ohh, that's what THAT means!" It very much reminds me of a book I read last year called The Hidden Curriculum. In THAT book it discusses the importance of teaching the unstated rules of society to our kids on the autism spectrum. This book is a perfect example of this--it explains the simple unstated rules "everybody knows", but not everybody really knows them!Yes! A nine year old wrote this book, but it's FOR kids, and speaks in a way that they can understand. It covers the topics that are important to kids like mine AND, because it's NOT spoken by a grown up, he is more receptive to hearing it. I think this young author is absolutely amazing. And to those negative reviewers--ha ha, guess what? This book just so happened to be recently honored by the United Nations and it is being translated into about a zillion languages and put on cd so its message can be shared world-wide! Now that is quite an accomplishment for ANY author, much less "just a nine year old." I highly recommend this book. Just because it seems (as my kids say) "duh" to us, doesn't mean it is to OUR kids.

...it is such a great premise, and the author seems so thoughtful! However, it just isn't useful for our family. We've already discussed the rules covered here (except for some of the school-related ones, since we're homeschooling)with our 6-year-old son in greater detail than is found here. Two paragraphs of advice is not going to prepare my son to attend a wedding, for example.Maybe as my son gets older, we'll find that he would appreciate hearing this advice from another child rather than from his parents. If that happens, I'll buy the book again (I'm returning it now). This would be a great book to have in a support group lending library for a child to peruse, but it just isn't useful enough for our particular situation to keep on our shelf. I hope Ms. Myles writes a book on living on one's own when she's older--by the time my son is ready to do that, I imagine he would greatly prefer to follow a peer's advice than his mother's!

Not helpful,
This review is from: Practical Solutions to Everyday Challenges for Children with Asperger Syndrome (Paperback)
There was little in here to help the high functioning kids. Much of the the advice was not detailed enough for an Aspie and above the head of many. It was a nice effort, but I did not find it worth the price.

Unfortunate Offering,

This book really was not helpful and the information offered to sell the book should lead with the fact that the author is only nine years old. It reads like something any slightly precocious nine year old would write about general behavior. There are no "solutions" that I could find in the content, nor any particular insights into the specific - and debilitating - challenges that children with Asperger Syndrome face. There are some helpful books written by and for young people with Asperger Syndrome. This book is not one of them.
