a book written in 1910 - with so many quotes it's difficult to choose favorites.

Some are practical:
"If charity (that is, loving helpful associations) begins at home, it certainly does not stop at the threshold, or leap therefrom those nearest us. The best citizens are those who take interest of those on their street or ward or village, for influence on civic reform is dependent on neighborliness"

Some are condemning for us today:
"That a child is not fond of reading is a testimony that his parents no less than his teachers have failed in their duty."

Some are downright delightful:
"It is about the time when a girl is learning 'Virgil' in high school that she will be tempted by vanity and the desire to 'be like the other girls' to put on French Heels. Then it is that the teacher or mother should quote to the line of the 'Aneneid' about Venus: 'The true goddess is shown by her gait' - to save her from irreparable folly."

If you read this as a light-hearted book, you're sure to enjoy many of the ideas. If you are a moderate feminist, you will probably want to throw this across the room. Just remember this was a totally different time and general mindset. There are ideas on Marriage, Mothering, Interior Décor, and Food Preparation. I shared many of the ideas on my Facebook status and friends were delighted as well

I was thrilled to find this available on Kindle--FREE! My cherished copy, given to me in 1974 by my grandmother, has a place of honor on my bookshelf--but as it is a century old, it requires careful handling. Many people class this book as "nostalgia", or even "humor". I class it as an essential book for any woman trying to run a household. Granted, we don't have to trim the wicks on kerosene lamps very often anymore (if at all--though I have a half dozen at home). And few houses have basements, or use coal for heat. But the VALUES this book teaches--healthy diets for children, proper discipline and good habits, choosing quality furniture and much more--are always useful.

I used this book in the 80's to choose furniture for my first apartment, and start my first writing career. When I married and had my two boys, I used the advice in this book to feed, clothe, and raise them--and the dozen or so other kids who ended up living with me, who were friends of my sons. My boys called these children from modern homes "refugees"--and to this day they all call me "mom", and descend en masse on my home for holidays and other times. Yes, this book is old fashioned. But THE IDEAS IN THIS BOOK STILL WORK, AND THE PRINCIPALS STILL HOLD TRUE.

After raising a bakers' dozen of boys and one girl, plus my own, I can say with pride that all my children graduated high school, many have graduated college as well. Many of the boys served in, or are now serving in, the military--and my daughter is one of the most confident, old fashioned, sensible young women I know.
