Practical Techniques for Building the High School Marching BandAuthor: K. Owens Davenport This is a must have for any first year high school band director. This book gives plenty of suggestions in the aspects of organizing the marching band program. Many topics such as Instrumentation, Recruitment, Retention, Uniform Design, Communication, Inventory Maintenance and Repair, and Forming a Band Boosters are discussed with many different flexible ideas for each. Davenport also gives tips on the 5 most important people to know at the school as well as developing the marching band philosophy of the reader and designing the marching band program. While the author mentions that the book is aimed toward show style bands, there is really no huge differences in the advice that he gives and the terminology that he uses and can be used for any style band from corps style to Big Ten style to scatter bands (Ivy League). All of the information transfers equally. If you are a marching band enthusiast or just wanting to get a different perspective then this is the book to get.
