Product Description

As far back as I can remember I have had UNIX around. My bed time stories were about it and the first words out of my mouth were 'UNIX is cool'. Well, maybe not the first words, but I have been around the UNIX systems my entire professional career. I figure it is just as close.

I have one more confession to make. Lately I have been getting tired of seeing a thousand pages or longer for introductory books on UNIX and Linux or practical guides that are anything but practical. All these books give UNIX a reputation for being extremely difficult to learn and use. Would you want to read a thousand page practical or introductory book? No? I can't blame you. I wouldn't want to read it either.

I hope that this book will change your mind about UNIX. It will arm you with a true practical knowledge of UNIX. Knowledge which will serve as your guide and as your reference. Enjoy it and happy journey!

This edition adds and updates Linux specific commands.
It is pocket size and it is for the rest of us!

Eugene Khmelevsky

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quick start, September 3, 2010

This review is from: Practical UNIX/Linux (For the Rest of Us) (Kindle Edition)
The author has put together a good collection of the most commonly used commands and the most commonly used switches for those commands. It's like one of those "learn a language" tapes business people use when they travel. It's not going to make you a Linux guru, but its going to show you what you need to know to get to get by. This is a very practical book, which was clearly written by someone who uses Linux a lot and who has paid careful attention to the commands they use most often. The writing style is clear and no-nonsense. There are some good explanations of why and when to use tools, but the book is not bogged down with theory or conjecture. This is a good pocket reference and fits nicely on my droid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and concise. Helpful for new and current users, July 4, 2011

I like it. Its quick and concise. There are no digressions or in depth history of commands. Its a good reference guide if you are starting off or just got into using UNIX/Linux platforms. Don't expect to become a master of UNIX/Linux world using this. Of course, using man command on your box will help you too, but it has a lot of information that will discourage you (especially if you are a new user). I suggest trying these commands out as you go since there is no point memorizing these when you can't put it to practical use. I don't suggest these for advanced/expert users.. but then again why would you go for something that has the word "Practical," in the book if you claim you're advanced/expert in the environment?
